What is the history of El Paso?

It's believed that El Paso -- "The Crossing" -- has been inhabited for up to 12,000 years. Spanish explorers first crossed through the area in the 1580s. The village of El Paso became a temporary base for Spanish governance in the region in 1680. El Paso largely stayed out of the Texas Revolution and remained self-governed with both Mexican and Texan leaders. It was annexed to Texas in 1846. Oil discoveries in the Permian Basin in the mid-20th century led to economic prosperity in El Paso and the surrounding areas that last to this day. El Paso's location directly on the border contributes to significant economic ties to Mexico.

How is the weather in El Paso?

El Paso's nickname is "The Sun City." It has an average of 302 days of sunshine every year, making it one of the sunniest cities in America. It has a hot desert climate, so A/C is a necessity when looking for rental homes in El Paso. The city averages 8.8 inches of rainfall, primarily between June and September. Daytime highs in the city can climb into the 90s between May and September. During the winter, daytime highs stay in the upper 50s and low 60s. How do I get around town?

Most people need a personal car to get around in El Paso, although the city has a very good public transportation system. The Sun Metro Mass Transit System, which operates the city bus service, has been praised as one of the best mass transit systems in North America. El Paso County Transit operates a fleet of smaller buses in East El Paso. The El Paso Streetcar is a system of historically restored streetcars that runs on a loop between Downtown El Paso and the University of Texas. El Paso International Airport is the biggest airport in West Texas. Amtrak Train Service runs from El Paso as well, providing three trips weekly to Los Angeles, CA, and New Orleans, LA.

What is the El Paso commute like?

Four bridges serve as international border crossings in the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez area. All of them are toll bridges except for the Bridge of the Americas. Interstate 10 is the main freeway running through El Paso and connects to Los Angeles, CA, in the west and Jacksonville, FL, in the east. The Patriot Freeway (US HWY 54) is one of the main north-south routes through the city. At its southern end, it terminates near the border close to the Bridge of the Americas. The Cesar Chavez Border Highway runs next to the border on the American side through most of the city.
