Elmira is both a town and city. The town serves as the gateway to New YorkÆs scenic southern Finger Lakes region and surrounds the city on three sides. The Chemung River, which cuts through town from west to east, provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and picturesque views. Elmira also has historical and artistic significance as the place where Mark Twain spent 20 summers writing novels.
What is the history of Elmira?
The Town of Elmira was established in 1792, although its name wasnÆt officially changed from Chemung to Elmira until 1808. Elmira started out as a faming area and steadily grew over the years with the changes that railroads and other industrial developments brought. The town served as a major hub for transportation with the building of the Chemung Canal. Elmira College, located in the downtown area, was established in 1855 and continues to educate students today.
How is the weather in Elmira?
Elmira has mild summer weather with temperatures that rarely reach the 80s and 90s during the day and lows in the 50s and 60s during the night. The average temperatures in summer are in the upper 70s, with July being the hottest month. Elmira has cold winters with temperatures dipping into the teens and 20s at night and daytime temperatures in the 30s. January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 23 degrees. June tends to be the wettest month of the year in Elmira, while March is the windiest. Elmira has an annual precipitation of around 23 inches, including rain and snow.
How do I get around town?
Many residents in Elmira have cars for getting around, but public transportation is also available. The Chemung County Transit System (C-TRAN) runs several fixed bus routes within Elmira, as well as a bus route to nearby Corning Community College. Elmira residents can also take C-TRAN buses that connect with the Corning Erwin Area Transit System and the Steuben County Transit System to reach other towns.

Jones House, an Underground Railroad House and Museum. Residents can learn more about this part of ElmiraÆs history at the museum, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Elmira offers artistic and historical attractions, as well as outdoor fun, for residents to enjoy. The Arnot Art Museum features a collection of European and American art from the 18th through 21st centuries. Residents can explore ElmiraÆs history at the Chemung Valley History Museum in the downtown area. The museum includes an exhibit focusing on Mark Twain. Eldridge Park offers rides and attractions, including a historic carousel, bumper cars and boat rides. Picnic areas, mini golf and other outdoor activities and amenities can also be found at this park.

ElmiraÆs local festivals are a great opportunity for residents to gather and meet other community members. Those who live in Elmira apartments can enjoy delicious food at the Annual BBQ in the Park in downtown Elmira at Wisner Park, which is typically held in late September. During July, Elmira hosts the Elmira Street Painting Festival featuring creative activities in the historic downtown area. The annual Octagon Fair in late September celebrates the life and works of Mark Twain.

ElmiraÆs location provides convenient access to both Sugar Hill State Forest and Finger Lakes National Forest for camping vacations. Both forests, which are less than an hour north of Elmira, offer a wide range of activities, such as hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, biking, horseback riding and snowmobiling. Larger cities with tourist attractions, dining and more, such as Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, are only a few hours away.
