Forest Hills Overview
Forest Hills is a small neighborhood of Queens, which is also a borough of New York City. It has about 80,000 residents within its 2.6 square miles. It features the best of both worlds with a busy, thriving commercial area featuring many apartment buildings along Queens Boulevard, and quieter residential areas with single family homes. The area is extremely walkable and there's plenty of public transportation. Schools in the area are highly rated, and you're still near all the things that Brooklyn and Manhattan have to offer if you ever need to see something new.
What is the history of Forest Hills?
The root of Forest Hills begins with the creation of Forest Park in 1895. This 538 acre piece of land is the third largest park in Queens, and the tenth largest in New York City. In 1906, the Cord Meyer Development Company purchased six nearby family farms, totalingá600 acres, and named the areaáForest Hills. Single family homes were constructed and roads were laid out by 1910. In 1911, the Long Island Rail Road came to Forest Hills, with the Queens Boulevard Trolley Line joining two years later. These connections to Manhattan helped spur the development of Forest Hills.
How is the weather in Forest Hills?
The weather in Forest Hills stays pretty favorable year-round. Winters are mild with January being the coldest month at 39á░F, on average. Summers are warm with average highs in the mid-80s during July and August. There isáa small handful of rainy days each month, but no season is wetter than another. Average snowfall for the area is less than 12 inches per year. This makes it easy to step out of your Forest Hills apartments any time of year and enjoy the season.
How do I get around town?
Public transportation in the city is plentiful. There are 20 bus routes of the MTA Regional Bus Operations that can take you to Elmhurst, Jamaica, Williamsburg, Manhattan, and more. The New York City Subway has four stations in Forest Hills. There are also two commuter rail stations for the Long Island Rail Road. If you plan to stay in the neighborhood, you can walk, bike, or drive your own car to many places. When you need to get away, LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) are both under 10 miles away.
What is the Forest Hills commute like?
"If you prefer to travel by car, Queens Boulevard is the main route through town. The street has many lanes and can be difficult to navigate which is how it got its nickname ""Boulevard of Death"", due to the high rate of pedestrian deaths. Austin Street is another major area and is where you will find many of the commercial businesses. As for major highways, Forest Hills is bordered by Union Turnpike and Jackie Robinson Parkway to the south, Grand Central Parkway on the east, and the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to the north."
What are the local media outlets?
When you need something fun to listen to, tune in to WBGO 88.3 FM for jazz music, WNSH 94.7 FM for country music, WPLJ 95.5 FM for contemporary Christian music, or WQHT 97.1 FM for hip-hop. To stay up on the local news, switch on ABC7 New York, CBS2 New York, or Fox5NY. For hyper-local news, check out the Forest Hills Times, or Forest Hills Post. To see news for all of Queens, subscribe to Queens Examiner, Queens Ledger, Queens Post, or Queens Chronicle.

Whether you're young and single, married, or a parent, you'll find plenty to love about Forest Hills.
What Forest Hills landmarks should I see?
The West Side Tennis Club is probably the most notable part of Forest Hills. It was home to the U.S. Open until 1978 when it was moved four miles away to Flushing Meadows Park. Several movies have been filmed using this location and The Beatles and Mumford and Sons have both performed there.áThere are two monuments in Forest Hills Gardens. One is a tribute to World War I victims. The other is the mast of Columbia, which won the America's Cup yacht races in 1899 and 1901.
What is there to do around Forest Hills?
For great shopping and dining, you'll want to visit charming Austin Street. People from many other neighborhoods come here for its shops, cafΘs, restaurants, and more. Where are the nearby vacation spots?

If you're looking to get a little further away from home, Philadelphia is two and a half hours away, Boston is just under four hours away, Baltimore is four hours away, and Washington D.C. is just another forty minutes further. You're already just 30 û 45 minutes away from soaking up the sun and sand if you head to Jones Beach. There's also a large wilderness area four hours northwest when you need a little breathing room.
Where is the best place to move in Forest Hills?
Since Forest Hills is already a neighborhood in itself, there isn't a lot of variety between the 2.6 square miles. That being said, luxury apartments in Forest Hills near Queens Boulevard or Austin Street will be best if you like to be near the hustle and bustle of city life with easy access to shops and restaurants. If you have a family and outgrow Forest Hills apartments, there are plenty of Tudor-style single family homes in the area as well.
