Honolulu Overview

Identified as one of the country’s happiest places, it is no wonder that Honolulu, HI frequently entices short-term visitors to become long-term residents. Its laid-back vibe set in a practical paradise combined with its rich and diverse cultural and artistic offerings presents a great deal of upside when considering places to relocate. Known as the Hawaiian Island’s cultural and culinary hub, this metro area also features a booming job market.  Honolulu is also world-renowned for its beloved Waikiki Beach.

What is the history of Honolulu?

As the state capital of the state of Hawaii since 1845 and its most populous city, Honolulu is the main gateway to Hawaii. Honolulu means “calm port,” “protected bay,” or “sheltered harbor,” and is believed to have been founded some 2,000 years ago. Honolulu is the most remote city of its size and holds the unique distinction of being both the southernmost and westernmost major U.S. city. It is a major hub for military defense and international business, and plays host to a diverse assortment of east-west and Pacific cuisine, culture, and traditions. Honolulu also houses the nation’s only royal palace and is the setting for one of the most famous military attacks that took place at Pearl Harbor and ushered the United States into WWII.

How is the weather in Honolulu?

Honolulu boasts tropical temperatures and a pleasant weather outlook for most of the year. It isn’t called paradise for nothing, after all. The temperatures and the weather patterns experienced can vary, though, depending on whether you are in the mountainous region or the metro area. The farther up the mountains you travel, the cooler the temperatures tend to become. Humidity is a big factor to consider as this rain-forest-like environment can get quite humid. The highest humidity levels are usually experienced in the spring months. Average temperatures range from 74 degrees in the winter to 79 degrees in the summer. The pleasant temperatures and tropical climate only add to the appeal for homes for rent in Honolulu.

How do I get around town?

The Daniel K. Inouye International Airport is located near downtown Honolulu. This airport is used frequently by tourists and residents alike to access other islands, the mainland, or another country. Flight times range from 20 to 50 minutes between the Hawaiian Islands. The city of Honolulu does provide a great transportation option for its residents, which is The Bus. This service provides transportation to around 113,000 passengers weekly and is considered the most trusted form of public transportation in the city.

What is the Honolulu commute like?

Honolulu has a unique problem due to its island design, narrow roads, and limited space; it has too many vehicles to maneuver without excessive backups. For this reason, residents experience daily rush-hour backups, yet still prefer driving their own vehicle to the other forms of transportation available, such as their impressive bus system. High parking prices are a big issue due to the small number of parking spaces available in the city.  Despite its small footprint, Honolulu has some of the worst traffic in the entire nation. Many residents still choose to drive their own cars or instead opt for a scooter to be about to dodge in and out between vehicles stuck in traffic. This is a factor to look at when considering Honolulu rental homes as you might want to break with the trend and instead opt for other forms of transportation to get to and from work.

Why live in Honolulu, HI?

Honolulu rentals are not for every type of personality. Island life does come with its own speed. This means that even though there are many business opportunities on the islands, living in Honolulu would not likely be a good fit for the type-A personality who likes to go, go, go. The city is known to run on what is referred to by residents as “Hawaiian time,” which is just a slower pace of life in all things. This is a welcome change for many people and this unique city is one of the safest in the nation. Therefore, there are many advantages to being willing to take life a step or two slower.

What Honolulu landmarks should I see?

There are many cultural and noteworthy landmarks to explore in and around Honolulu thanks to its robust history. One such landmark is the Diamond Head State Monument. This natural landmark is formed from a dormant volcano crater. It offers hiking trails, breathtaking coastal views, and presents a piece of history. Of course, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is also worth visiting. It is a National Historic Landmark consisting of five memorials that commemorate the events around the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941 and other events pertaining to WWII. The previously mentioned royal palace, the Iolani Palace, also deserves recognition as it is the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy. This National Historic Landmark location in downtown Honolulu tells the story of the ruling family who built the palace in 1882.

What is there to do around Honolulu?

When seeking homes for rent in Honolulu, you will be happy to learn that this culturally diverse city boasts a wide array of activities and things to do. Of course, you can explore the beautiful beaches of the area, along with countless family parks. However, there are also plenty of shopping opportunities at the Ala Moana Center, boasting over 80 stores and restaurants, as well as the International Market Place, which is one of the newest offerings in the region. In addition to the countless activities that you can enjoy throughout Honolulu that pertain to the ocean, the Honolulu Zoo is also worth a visit thanks to its impressive botanical garden and some 900 animals.

Where is the best place to move in Honolulu?

This paradise on earth features countless areas in which to reside. There are a few that are worth considering over the other options. Maunawili is a safe and cozy neighborhood that is made up of families with small children. It has many community activities and is a picturesque suburb in the city of Honolulu. Kailua is another option and is a small town featuring proximity to the beach and is situated near the neighboring towns of Waimanalo and Kaneohe.
