What is the history of Jacksonville?

Jacksonville’s location made it a prime spot for European settlers, dating all the way back to the 1500s. The St. Johns River flowing into the Atlantic Ocean provided a thriving place for trading and exporting goods. The French Huguenots built a colony here first. But they only held it for a few years. The Spanish took control after that and kept it for over 200 years. Jacksonville became a city — and part of the U.S. territory of Florida— in 1822. Named after Andrew Jackson, the city turned into a major tourist destination in the 1800s and 1900s. Tourism is still a huge draw for this coastal city thanks to its beautiful beaches!

How is the weather in Jacksonville?

Do you love hot weather? You get plenty of it in Jacksonville! Summer temps are usually in the 90s during the day. Nights typically cool off a bit to the low 70s. The hot weather’s also around during fall and spring, with highs in the 70s and 80s. But nights cool off more during these seasons — usually down to the 50 and 60s. What’s winter like in this Florida city? Highs tend to reach the mid to upper 60s! Lows are usually in the low 40s. Jacksonville’s rainy season happens during summer, with the occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling in. But the rest of the year is mostly clear and sunny!

How do I get around town?

Planning on moving here with a car or without one? If you’ll be driving, you can look for Jacksonville rentals pretty much anywhere! If not, the city does have some public transportation options. There’s JTA’s buses that travel around the downtown area and to some of the beach areas. There’s also a free monorail called the Jacksonville Skyway — but it only covers a couple of miles. Overall, the downtown area is the most walkable part of this sprawling city. Heading out of the city? Jacksonville International Airport is just 15 minutes from downtown for domestic and international flights. Amtrak also has a station in the northern part of town.

What is the Jacksonville commute like?

You’ll spend an average of 25 minutes commuting to and from work as a Jacksonville resident. But that can change, depending on where you work and where you live. The city has easy access to several major roads. I-295 loops around the downtown area. I-10 runs in an east-west direction on the western side of town. I-95 runs in a north-south direction through the middle of the city. There’s also US Routes 1 and 17 for going north-south. The most congested road areas tend to be near downtown — especially during weekday rush hour! But roads leading to the beaches can also become crowded with out-of-town traffic.

There’s also Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park and Camp Hilton, where you can explore more history and enjoy the area’s natural beauty! Main Street Bridge offers great views of the river. And the Friendship Fountain puts on incredible shows with water and lights! Stroll through the Riverside District to see historical buildings, browse antiques, and enjoy the outdoors in the area’s parks. Visit Jacobs Clock, a 1901 clock located in downtown.
