Lubbock Overview
Thinking about moving to the Hub City? You’re not alone! Lubbock’s a thriving city with a small-town atmosphere that’s been enticing many people to settle here in recent years. It’s also much more affordable than bigger metro areas in Texas. Living here means having access to arts and culture, higher education, outdoor recreation, and major employers in healthcare and other industries. But how’s the weather in this South Plains city? What are the average commute times? We’ll take a closer look at this western TX city to help you get a feel for what it’s like to live here — before starting your search for rental homes in Lubbock!
What is the history of Lubbock?
Lubbock’s days as an incorporated city go all the way back to 1909. But before that, it wasn’t just one city. In fact, two towns — Monterey and Old Lubbock — combined into one to form what we now know as the Hub City. That nickname comes from Lubbock’s location as a hub for healthcare, education, and economics. It also became a college town back in 1923 when Texas Technological College was established. You may know it by its current name — Texas Tech University. Lubbock’s history also includes being the birthplace of 1950s’ rock-n-roll singer/songwriter Buddy Holly. Over the years, Lubbock has grown into a lively place for college students, professionals, and families!
How is the weather in Lubbock?
If you like the heat, you’ll love summers here! Temps during the day climb into the mid 90s or higher. Lows are usually in the 60s, giving you some relief from the heat. Winters are mild, with highs in the 50s — but Lubbock does get snow from time to time! Lows can drop to the 20s at night. Spring highs range from the 60s to 80s, with lows in the 40s and 50s. Fall temps also range from warm to hot, with highs in the 60s to 80s. Lows are usually in the 40s and 50s. While Lubbock’s a sunny place overall, it does get just under 20 inches of rain per year — mostly in summer!
How do I get around town?
Wondering if you’ll need a car here? Having one gives you a convenient way to get to and from work or college classes — and around town in general. But you also have city buses available. Citibus runs fixed-route bus service throughout Lubbock, including downtown and many neighborhoods. You can also reach shopping centers, schools, and other amenities in the city via bus. What about getting in and out of town? There’s Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport north of the city. Or you can take a Greyhound bus to and from the bus station downtown.
What is the Lubbock commute like?
It’s shorter than the national average! Lubbock commutes take roughly 16 minutes one way, making it quick to get to and from work or school. Your own commute is going to depend on where you plan on looking for homes for rent in Lubbock. But you’ll have easy access to major highways and roads, no matter where you settle! I-27 runs north-south through central Lubbock. US Route 84 runs northwest-southeast through the middle of the city. US Route 62 goes northeast-southwest through it, too. And there’s Loop 289 around the city to help you reach your destination faster!
Why live in Lubbock, TX?
Lubbock rental homes have strong demand thanks to the city’s lower cost of living and vibrant culture. It’s got a great mix of college town vibes and small-town friendliness in an affordable environment. There’s nightlife and family-friendly amenities, museums and parks — and much more! Having so many major employers in big industries here is another big draw. Some of these include Covenant Health and other hospitals, Texas Tech University, and telecommunications companies. Lubbock’s also close to several exciting places for day trips, like Caprock Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, and Lake Allen Henry. It’s also near Austin, Fort Worth, Albuquerque, and other cities for weekend getaways.
What Lubbock landmarks should I see?
The Buddy Holly Center’s a top spot to see once you’re settled in Lubbock! It’s a permanent exhibit featuring statues, memorabilia, and art galleries. Visit the Bacon Home, a historic house that dates back to 1916, to see one of the city’s many buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Catch a live performance at the Cactus Theatre, a movie theater built in the 1930s. Stroll through local cemeteries, like the City of Lubbock Cemetery, Englewood Cemetery, and Estacado Cemetery. Stop by the FW and D South Plains Railway Depot on Crickets Avenue to see the city’s first official historic landmark.
What is there to do around Lubbock?
Exploring Lubbock rentals means you’re one step closer to being able to enjoy everything the city has to offer! Visit the American Windmill Museum to see the world’s biggest collection of windmills. Go ziplining and do other family-friendly activities at Adventure Park or cool off at Lubbock Water Rampage. Explore Lubbock Lake Landmark, an archaeological site and ancient watering hole. Visit the Museum of Texas Tech University to see dinosaurs, art, textiles, and other exhibits. Take a short drive to nearby vineyards, such as Oswald Vineyard in Brownfield — or visit one right in town at Burklee Hill Vineyards!

Maxey Park’s also near the university and has a big park where you can go fishing, have picnics, and enjoy fresh air. Clapp Park has tons of amenities, including a dog park and arboretum.
