Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden might sound to you like a tropical paradise, like something out of a fairytale. And you'd be right - located on Old Cutler Road, it's the perfect exotic escape that's close to your apartment. Sprawling over 83 acres, the park boasts 2,600 varieties of palm trees as well as native and exotic flowers, vines and flowering trees. The overall natural and landscaped areas are beautiful, but there are also a series of impressive sculptures dotted around the park, as well as a range of exhibits. Still, this is more of a tranquil getaway for the day, where you're guaranteed some peace and quiet. Be wary though of hot days, when it tends to get a little unbearable inbetween the tree-lined, shaded areas. Admission costs $20, which is admittedly on the high side, but it's worth it; even if you don't feel up to walking, you can take one of the tram tours, or just relax with a coffee in one of the cafés and try to spot one of the giant iguanas. To keep you going back at different times of the year, there are a variety of seasonal events, such as the mango and chocolate festivals.
