St. Philip's was founded in 1898 by Bishop James "Steptoe" Johnston. What began as a sewing class with fewer than 20 girls underwent a transformation in the early 1900's from parochial school to industrial school before finally becoming an accredited two year community college with a varied curriculum in 1917. Over the years a multimillion dollar expansion and a location change have ensured that St Phillips continues to serve an increasingly diverse San Antonio population. Today, it is one of the oldest and diverse colleges in the United States and one of the fastest growing College in the State of Texas with a semester enrollment of over 8000 students. Admission St Phillips is an open admission institution, which means that if you have a social security number, a high school diploma or GED, you can apply online and be accepted. The University does not consider SAT or ACT scores, but you must submit them anyway. Then, if you are a first time student, you must take the college placement exam. Finally, you must speak to an advisor if you are a first time college student. Areas of Study The College offers classes that are designed to transfer to a major university. In addition to taking basic core classes such as Mathematics, and English, a student can take the classes and receive a vocational degree in subjects as varied as Allied Construction, Welding, Culinary Arts or Automotive Technology. The College also offers associates of Nursing degrees as well as continuing Adult Education. If you then decide to take a full class load, your average tuition is going to be around $1223 a semester; with 41% of enrolled students receiving some form of Federal Financial Aid. San Antonio Apartment Life The College does not offer residential housing to its students, however, the campus is only a few minutes from a number of San Antonio apartments available for rent. Many of these cater directly to students with specials and a fun apartment living experience. The benefit of living in such a culturally diverse area like San Antonio is the opportunity to participate in local sports, vibrant night life and a variety of other cultural events. San Antonio apartment living gives a student tons of options for fun and really getting into and enjoying life!
