Richmond Overview

Richmond` VA` is a fascinating city blending modern conveniences and "Old World" charm. It's not unusual to find a red brick building that dates to the Colonial era next to a modern shopping center. As the state capital of Virginia` the city has a thriving arts and cultural scene. Richmond has a strong economy` so people in many industries have no trouble finding a job when they move here. Traffic is light` the weather is pleasant` and the city has many peaceful parks for residents to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Rental homes in Richmond provide easy access to the city center or the great outdoors in just minutes.

What is the history of Richmond?

The Richmond area was settled by Westerners during the early 17th century` but the city was not incorporated until 1742. The city played an important role in the Revolutionary War and was the site where Patrick Henry delivered his "Give me liberty` or give me death" speech. Richmond became the Virginia state capital in 1780 and was burned to the ground by Loyalist troops in 1781. Richmond also played a central role in the Civil War and was the capital of the Confederacy for a time. Since the Civil War` Richmond has continued to grow and thrive and is now the fourth-largest city in Virginia.

How is the weather in Richmond?

Richmond has four distinct seasons that include hot and humid summers and cold winters. Cold air tends to be broken up by the mountain range to the west of the city` so it doesn't get as cold as many other places on the Eastern seaboard. The average daily mean temperature in January is around 38 degrees F. Richmond receives around 11 inches of snowfall every winter` which is well below the national average. The hottest period of the year is July when the average high temperature is around 90 degrees. The city averages about 44 inches of rainfall every year.

How do I get around town?

The Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) operates an intercity bus service in Richmond and some of the surrounding communities. It is advisable to own a car if you live in Richmond` however` since the bus lines mainly service the suburban areas around the city. The GRTC serves 34 bus routes and four rapid transit routes. Greyhound Lines offers multiple daily trips to other cities in the region` including Washington` DC` New York City` Philadelphia` and Raleigh. Richmond International Airport is in Sandston` which is seven miles southeast of the city. It offers more than 200 daily flights to domestic cities and larger connecting airports.

What is the Richmond commute like?

Interstate 95 and Interstate 64 intersect near Downtown Richmond` just north of the State Capitol Building. There is a good system of bypass roads that surround the city` which are useful for those who don't live in or commute to the city center. The town is surrounded by Interstate 295` State Route 150` and State Route 288. As far as traffic is concerned in Richmond` it is much lighter than you will experience in any other large city in America. An accident might add 15 to 20 minutes to your commute` but for the most part` residents have no difficulty getting to and from work from their Richmond rental homes in the suburbs.

Why live in Richmond, VA?

Agriculture` business` finance` and healthcare are the main industries in Richmond. Anyone with skills in those areas will be able to make a good living and raise a family comfortably here. Art lovers and history buffs will never run out of things to do or places to visit while living here. Richmond has festivals and community events throughout the year that attract large and friendly crowds. The city is centrally located in the state and surrounded by beautiful countryside` rolling hills` and natural beauty. Not only that` but it's also just a 90-minute drive to much larger cities like Washington` DC` and Pittsburgh.

What Richmond landmarks should I see?

The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and is a must-see landmark in Richmond. The historic St. John's Episcopal Church where Patrick Henry delivered his Revolutionary War speech is also still standing. Monument Avenue is a tree-lined avenue with statues and monuments that pay tribute to Richmond's many war heroes. The Richmond Main Street Station is a historic train station with a clock tower that serves as another interesting landmark in the city. Virginia Commonwealth University has numerous 19th-century buildings in the Greek architectural style.

What is there to do around Richmond?

The 17th Street Farmer's Market has been in operation for 275 years and is one of the oldest markets in the United States. Sports fans may enjoy the multiple NASCAR Cup races that take place yearly at the Richmond Raceway. Admission is free at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and it features collections from around the world. The Maymont Mansion and Robins Nature Center are a favorite location for those who enjoy exploring various types of gardens. Richmond is also known for its expansive restaurant scene and many interesting curio shops in the Downtown area.

Where is the best place to move in Richmond?

Suburban and historic neighborhoods surround the city` so there are many great choices when looking for rental homes in Richmond. The South Richmond neighborhood is on the south side of the James River` across from Downtown Richmond; it offers easy access to the city center. The North Side neighborhood is on the opposite side of Downtown and is the location of where many of the city's early streetcar suburbs were. Church Hill is a fun neighborhood east of Downtown with many Queen Anne-style houses and a park with a miniature Statue of Liberty. Oregon Hill is an affordable neighborhood southwest of Downtown Richmond that sits on the banks of the James River.
