Riverside Overview

Looking for a home with mountain and river views? As a Riverside resident, you’ll be near the beautiful Santa Ana River and several towering mountains, including San Jacinto Peak. But this Inland Empire town has much more to offer than its natural surroundings. It’s also conveniently close to downtown Los Angeles, Anaheim — and many other Southern CA towns and cities! Need a few more reasons? Incredible weather, tons of cultural attractions and entertainment, and good job opportunities make Riverside homes for rent a great choice! We’ll take a deeper look at what Riverside has to offer — and why it may just be the ideal town for you!

What is the history of Riverside?

Did you know that Southern California’s very first golf course was built in Riverside? The city’s roots go back to 1870 when settlers and investors established a colony dedicated to culture and education. That included the region’s original golf course — and a thriving citrus industry centered around newly introduced navel oranges! Riverside became a wealthy city filled with upscale buildings, some of which are still around as historic landmarks. Notable visitors came to stay in Riverside’s famous Mission Inn Hotel over the years, including President Teddy Roosevelt, Judy Garland, and Andrew Carnegie. The city still offers an enriching environment, with annual festivals, good schools, historic neighborhoods,

How is the weather in Riverside?

In a word — hot! Riverside has summer temps that reach the mid to upper 90s during the day. But summer nights cool off to the low 60s. You don’t have to worry much about freezing in winter either. Daytime highs tend to be in the upper 60s — even in the middle of winter! Nighttime temps are usually in the low 40s. The rest of the year has high temps in the 70s and 80s and lows in the upper 40s and 50s. Riverside is mostly sunny. But it does have some rainy weather, usually during the winter months. Overall, you’ll have plenty of pleasant days to spend strolling along the river or enjoying other outdoor activities!

How do I get around town?

Driving around in your own car may be the easiest way to get from place to place. But you might not need a car to get around with Riverside rentals in certain areas, like downtown. The city has MetroLink trains that can get you from downtown to the La Sierra or Hunter Park areas. You can also travel to other Southern CA cities and towns via train. Riverside Transit Agency has several public bus routes in and around town. Going away? Riverside Municipal Airport has limited flights. But LAX, Ontario International Airport, and John Wayne Orange County Airport are all close by! Amtrak also has trains from Riverside to several destinations throughout CA — and the rest of the country!

What is the Riverside commute like?

Spending time in traffic is common with Riverside commutes. The average time to get to and from work is around 39 minutes — but rush hour can easily increase that! It’s something to keep in mind when exploring homes for rent in Riverside. Living close to major roadways might help cut down on commuting time. I-215 runs through the eastern part of town from north to south. State Route 91 runs right through the center of the city in a northeast to southwest direction. I-15 is just outside of Riverside to the west. And I-10 is just north of the city.

Why live in Riverside, CA?

Being a Riverside resident means you’re close to riverfront amenities — along with mountains and the coast! Anaheim is just over an hour away for Disneyland fun. And you can get to downtown LA in about 90 minutes or the San Bernardino National Forest in just 30 minutes! This great location puts Riverside rental homes in high demand. The city itself also offers tons of reasons to live here. It’s got major employers in healthcare, education, and manufacturing. And you’ll have plenty of festivals and events to attend, restaurants to dine at — and much more to see and do!

What Riverside landmarks should I see?

Start with Mission Inn! This famed hotel, dating back to the early 1900s, offers public tours focusing on its fascinating history. There’s also Fox Theater, built in 1929, and Heritage House — a Victorian home built in the late 1800s. Visit Riverside County Courthouse, dating back to 1904. Stroll down historic Victoria Avenue to admire its orange groves, eucalyptus trees, palm trees, and rose bushes. You can even see one of the original navel orange trees that made the city’s citrus industry such a huge success! Head to Benedict Castle to admire its Spanish-style architecture from the early 20th century. And visit Municipal Auditorium and Universalist-Unitarian Church for even more local landmarks!

What is there to do around Riverside?

Riverside offers lots of activities and attractions! Hike up Mount Rubidoux for a stunning view of the downtown area. Visit Jensen Alvarado Ranch, a historic ranch with a vineyard, plum orchards, ponds, and more. Explore UCR Botanic Gardens’ hiking trails and pathways through picturesque woods and fields filled with flowers, trees, and butterflies. Attend the annual Festival of Lights at Mission Inn during the holiday season! Visit California Citrus State Historic Park to celebrate the area’s citrus industry with grove tours, picnics — and more! There’s also the March Field Air Museum and Riverside Metropolitan Museum for educational attractions.

Rental homes in Riverside can be found from the outer edges of town to the very heart of downtown! But which is right for you? The downtown area is where you’ll find tons of amenities, events, and attractions. Mission Grove combines newer homes with historic surroundings. La Sierra in the western part of town puts you close to La Sierra University, public transportation, and several other amenities. Canyon Crest is filled with outdoor amenities, including Sycamore Highlands Park, hiking trails — and several athletic facilities.
