Sacramento Overview

Sacramento’s been booming in terms of its population, and it’s really not hard to see why! This California city has amazing weather and lots of amenities. It’s also got tree-lined streets and great job opportunities! Joining the ranks of those looking for Sacramento homes for rent? That’s a smart move if you want to live in a growing city with a lot to offer. Sacramento’s cost of living is a bit lower compared to many other CA cities. It also has scenic freshwater rivers and lakes and historic sites. Love weekend getaways? The city’s location makes it easy to get to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley, and many other destinations!

What is the history of Sacramento?

It wasn’t always a city. Sacramento got its start as a trading post called Fort Sutter in 1839, named for Swiss settler John Sutter Sr. Agriculture and trade flourished in the area. But the discovery of gold nearby led to a huge population boom. Sutter’s son made plans for a City of Sacramento just a couple miles south of the fort in 1848. And the city was officially incorporated in 1850. In fact, it’s the state’s oldest incorporated city! During the following years, the Pony Express and Sacramento Rail Yards played big roles in the city’s growth. Sacramento also went from being the City of Plains to the City of Trees. Residents planted tons of cottonwood, eucalyptus, and other trees in the area!

How is the weather in Sacramento?

Looking to move to an area where you don’t have to deal with frigid, snowy winters? Then you’re in luck with Sacramento! The city’s summer temps tend to hit the low 90s, with lows in the upper 50s. In winter, temps during the day usually reach the upper 50s and low 60s. Nighttime temps sometimes drop to the upper 30s. But below freezing temps aren’t a problem here! Fall and spring temps are incredibly pleasant, with highs in the 70s. What about precipitation? Sacramento typically has dry, sunny days during summer. Rainy days usually happen during the winter months. But you’ll still have tons of clear days to enjoy mild seasonal temps!

How do I get around town?

Choosing homes for rent in Sacramento means considering how you’ll get from place to place. Many people drive around the city. But biking is also an option, especially with Sacramento’s great weather! And the city also has public transportation you can use. Sacramento Regional Transit runs buses and three light rail lines. SRT has close to 70 bus lines, making it easy to get anywhere in the city! There’s also scooters, taxis, and ride shares for other transportation options. Leaving Sacramento? Take a Greyhound bus or Amtrak train to another city. Or you can fly out of Sacramento International Airport.

What is the Sacramento commute like?

How long you’ll spend driving to and from work depends on where you end up renting in the city. Living on the outer edges usually means a longer commute time. The closer you are to downtown, the quicker your daily drive should be. But this also depends on where you work. What’s the average time? It takes roughly 25 minutes to commute in Sacramento. But the shortest commutes are just under 20 minutes! And the longest can run about 30 minutes. You might hit more traffic on major roads in the area, especially during rush hour. I-80 runs northeast to southwest through the city. And I-5 runs through the western part of town from north to south.

Why live in Sacramento, CA?

Sacramento rentals are in high demand for many reasons! The area has several major employers, like Sutter Health, Intel, UC Davis Medical Center, and IBM. You can also stretch your budget further in Sacramento compared to other cities in CA. Looking for outdoor recreation? The city has two rivers to explore! And it’s close to Folsom Lake State Recreation Area for hiking, fishing, and more. Did you know that Sacramento is also the Farm to Fork Capital of the U.S.? It’s got tons of places to enjoy locally grown food!

What Sacramento landmarks should I see?

Sacramento’s one of the oldest cities in California, so it’s got plenty of landmarks to see. Take a guided tour of the Capitol building. Or stroll through the city’s historic waterfront area to explore Old Sacramento. Go right to the roots of the city with a visit to Sutter’s Fort. Bike or walk over Guy A. West Memorial Bridge for beautiful views of the American River. Looking for entertainment? Head to the Eagle Theatre, a landmark dating back to the area’s Gold Rush! Visit Old Mesopotamia at the Ziggurat building in the western part of town.

What is there to do around Sacramento?

Rental homes in Sacramento give you easy access to lots of incredible attractions and events! Head to Crocker Art Museum to view works of art from the Gold Rush era. Or visit the California State Railroad Museum to learn about the region’s rail history. See tons of animal species from around the world at the Sacramento Zoo. Love festivals? Aftershock, GoldenSky Country Music, and Sol Blume are just a few music festivals to enjoy. The Farm-to-Fork Festival in September features local foods, regional wines, and much more!

Where is the best place to move in Sacramento?

Some Sacramento rental homes offer convenient locations near the city’s amenities and attractions. But others put you in the outer parts of the city for a quieter environment. East Sacramento and Land Park are close to the downtown area for restaurants, nightclubs, and more! Curtis Park is filled with elegant Victorian homes. Tahoe Park and Campus Commons are near California State University. And Richmond Grove offers a more laid back place to live, while still being just a short drive from the downtown area. Want a historic neighborhood? Look for homes in Boulevard Park, Elmhurst, or Midtown.
