Hip and cool describes a place, and that's the best way to portray the Red Pearl Kitchen, a incredibly hip Chinese restaurant located close to most Gas Lamp apartments in San Diego. Gold and red are typically associated with the Orient, along with black. The walls at Red Pearl Kitchen are texture painted with these colors and the floor is black pebbled for a rich look, with soft, lantern-like lighting. The Eastern influence is definitely here, in the ambiance of this restaurant. The appetizers, salads and freshly cooked veggies nearly match the number of entrees on the Red Pearl Kitchen menu. Traditional appetizers such as pan-fried pot stickers and lobster cream cheese rolls are available, in addition to RPK specialties of wok-roasted edamame and Thai chili-glazed calamari. You should also try the spicy minced chicken lettuce wrap - yum! For entrees, you have a choice of wok-fried, noodles, hot pot or rice dishes. Black pepper beef, sweet and sour pork, chile prawns and cashew chicken are among the wok-fried dishes, with beef soya noodles, shrimp udon and pad Thai chicken offered with other selections for noodles. Indian beef curry, shiitake broth and yellow curry sea bass are included in the hot pot entrees, and rice can be vegetable, shrimp, chicken or combo fried rice - all delicious. Of course, nightly "Chef's selections" are available, and they can be spectacular sometimes. "Happy Endings" describes their desserts such as chocolate souffle and five spice cake with cinnamon gelato. For such a classy place, prices are reasonable, with appetizers and salads under $10, and most entrees under $15. And for an exhilarating experience for food lovers and the wannabe chef, make reservations for the chef's table alongside the busy kitchen. Here, you get to enjoy the delicious aromas of food steaming and sauteeing, the banter of cooks and helpers, and the bang and clatter of pots and pans as exquisite entrees are created. The bar is a popular place to visit for a pre-dinner drink, with a full complement of cocktails and a wide selection of red, white and sparkling wines, with several Sake varieties to choose from as well. If you're leaving downtown to go home to your apartment for the evening, take out of their awesome salads, main dishes or appetizers is available. Red Pearl Kitchen will accommodate groups of up to 200 if you'd like to reserve the entire restaurant, and private dining rooms are available for up to 14. When you're finished with your meal, take a tour through the Gas Lamp district where many other restaurants, bars and shops line the streets that have been renovated in recent years to pay tribute to the original founders of the beautiful city of San Diego.
