What is the history of Sioux Falls?

The Big Sioux River drew many settlers to the region back in the mid-1800s. That population growth led to the Village of Sioux Falls being established in 1876. But more and more settlers continued to come to the area, leading to the once-small prairie village becoming a full-fledged city in 1889. At the start of the 20th century, Sioux Falls had over 10,000 residents! That number grew to over 150,000 by the early 2000s — and continues to grow. Sioux Area Metro (SAM) offers bus routes throughout the city during the week. On weekends, there’s a crosstown bus service downtown with limited stops and SAM On Demand service. Planning to use public transportation? You’ll want to look for rental homes in Sioux Falls that are on bus routes — or close to them. Leaving the city? Sioux Falls Regional Airport in the northern part of town offers several flights a day. Greyhound, located close to the airport, also has bus service to other towns and cities.

This Midwest city has some great options for outdoor fun and adventure or relaxation. Visit Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum and the Japanese Gardens to stroll along paths surrounded by vivid blooms. Head to Great Plains Zoo to see rhinos, lions, penguins, and other animals in this 45-acre park. Visit Great Bear Recreation Park for snowboarding, skiing — and many other winter activities. Head back there in summer to hike along the park’s 4-mile trail system. Sioux Falls has plenty of things to do indoors, too! The Butterfly House and Aquarium has hundreds of butterflies! Orpheum Theater Center offers theatrical performances, concerts, and other events!
