Tallahassee Overview

Is the Florida Panhandle your top pick for a new home? Tallahassee rentals are in high demand due to the city’s affordable cost of living, proximity to beaches, and employment opportunities. Florida’s capital city offers a lively atmosphere with fun events, like the North Florida Fair and the Jazz and Blues Festival. It’s also minutes from the Gulf Coast for frequent beach trips! And it’s a college town thanks to Florida State University and Florida A&M University. What can you expect while living here? What kinds of things are there to do? We’ll explore many aspects of life in Tallahassee — from what the weather’s like to what types of activities and attractions are here!

What is the history of Tallahassee?

Tallahassee started out as a tiny place covering one-quarter of a mile. Several annexations over the years have led to its current size of 103 miles! The city got its name from an Apalachee Indian word meaning “old fields” or “old town.” Over the years, the Spanish and English had control of the area before it became part of the U.S. In 1821, Tallahassee officially became a city — and Florida’s capital. Nearly a decade later, the Tallahassee-St. Marks Railroad brought more industry and settlers to the area. As colleges opened during the 1800s, including Florida State University, the city became even more populated. Today, Tallahassee continues its tradition as a college town — while also attracting those looking for work in healthcare, education, and other fields.

How is the weather in Tallahassee?

Worried about missing out on fall foliage or snow as a Florida resident? Tallahassee’s one of the rare places in the state that sometimes gets all four seasons! While not common, the city does get snow flurries on occasion. The leaves also change color in this central Florida city, giving you foliage to admire! Summer weather is humid and hot, with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s. Winter highs are usually in the 60s, with lows in the 30s and 40s. Fall and spring have lows in the 40s and 50s and highs in the 70s and 80s. Summer storms and rainy days give the city an average precipitation of about 60 inches — but you’ll still have lots of sunny days to enjoy!

How do I get around town?

Your best bet is having a car, especially if you’re exploring Tallahassee homes for rent in the outer suburbs. This allows you to drive to work or school at your own convenience. The city does have a bus system known as StarMetro — but it mainly includes stops in the downtown area and only a few limited stops in the outer areas. What if you need to travel out of town? Tallahassee International Airport’s about 7 miles away from the city center in the southwestern part of town. Greyhound has a bus station in the downtown area for bus trips to other areas.

What is the Tallahassee commute like?

Trying to avoid sitting in heavy traffic day in and day out? You’ll be happy to know that the average commute here is around 22 minutes one way — that’s lower than the national average! Depending on where you look for homes for rent in Tallahassee, you may be able to cut that time down even more. I-10 runs east-west through the northern part of town. US Route 319 goes north-south through the eastern part of the city. US Route 90 runs east-west through the central part of town. These are just a few of the main roads that provide faster ways to get around the area.

Why live in Tallahassee, FL?

More and more people are looking for Tallahassee rental homes. The city’s affordability, location, and amenities are just a few of the top reasons for this. Tallahassee offers a lower cost of living compared to other big cities in Florida. Its location makes it easy to enjoy weekends at the beach or getaways to St. George Island, Florida Caverns State Park, and Providence Canyon State Park. Major employers in education, healthcare, agriculture, finance, and other industries bring lots of jobs to the area. It’s also an ideal place to rent if you’re going to one of the city’s colleges and universities as a student or staff member.

What Tallahassee landmarks should I see?

Step into the past — all the way back to the 1600s — with a visit to the Mission San Luis Apalachee. It’s a living history museum with reconstructed buildings and other exhibits that explore the area’s past under Spanish rule. Head over to St. Marks Lighthouse to see one of the oldest lighthouses in the state. It’s also a wildlife refuge, so plan on doing some hiking throughout the area while you’re there. Check out the Florida State Capitol Building for incredible views of Tallahassee from the 22nd floor! Stroll through the Railroad Square Art District for vibrantly colored buildings, art galleries, art studios — and more!

What is there to do around Tallahassee?

Love antique cars? The Tallahassee Automobile Museum has one of the biggest collections in the U.S! Looking for outdoor adventures? Head to Alfred B. Maclay Gardens State Park for hiking, canoeing, fishing, swimming, and other outdoor activities. Interested in the arts? Catch a show at Theatre Tallahassee — or attend the Opening Nights Performing Arts Series and Festival. You’ll also find plenty of places to shop and dine in the downtown area!

Where is the best place to move in Tallahassee?

To make a decision on rental homes in Tallahassee, consider how close you want to be to work or school, what your budget is, and other relevant factors. Downtown Tallahassee’s location means you’re near all kinds of amenities, including dining, shopping, museums, and nightlife. Lake Jackson has great schools and tons of outdoor recreation options. If you want to be near shopping and dining — without being right in downtown — there’s the Parkway neighborhood in the southeastern part of town.

Tallahassee is a hidden gem. Located at the top of the west part of the state, beauty, serenity, and nature quickly comes to mind. Although it's a college town, there is plenty for the locals to do without feeling overwhelmed. It's great for families and people who understand what quality of life means. Things are changing and the cost of living is going up in town, but it's still relatively cheap compared to other areas of the state. One of the best things about the city is the diversity and variety. There are a lot of boutique shops and eateries you won't find anywhere else, and the sense of community is unmatched.
