When one thinks of Floridian cuisine, Italian may not exactly be the first thing jumping to mind. After all, with its wealth of fishy options and warm weather patio dining, a heaping pile of pasta isn't exactly 'beach food'. Little do many know, however, that one of the southeast's best kept culinary delights is housed within the beachfront dunes in the form of Donatello. Rated by the infamously picky Zagat survey as being "easily the best Italian restaurant in Tampa", Donatello strives to deliver a taste of the old country from the moment you walk in the door. Opening its doors in 1984 and family run since the inception, Donatello specializes in northern Italian fare; thus, a fine selection of beef and seafood-heavy items dominate the dinner menu. While the prices tend to be a bit steep for the Florida market (think $18-$30 for entrees), the attention to detail and tradition are easily apparent. From the nostril-tantalizing aroma of the homemade sauce generously covering the Ossobuco Milanese (veal shank) to the robust parmesan and garlic sizzle of the Carpaccio di Filetto (sushi-thin slices of beef tenderloin), Donatello simply delivers. Finish your meal with a slice of fruit-topped cheese cake or a variety of Profiterols (cream and chocolate-laden puff pastries) and you'll be sure to say "that's amore!"
