Tempe became linked to the national transport system and building lot sales began to thrive. Shipping and commerce grew quickly. Roosevelt Dam opened in 1911, ensuring abundant water. Residential growth increased after WWII and farms disappeared. The city was finally annexed in 1974, and a decade later the small teacher’s college became Arizona State University.
