As a DC apartment-ite, you almost have an obligation to visit the National Mall and Memorial Parks. No, it's not a shopping mall, but an open area designed for strolling, where you can visit several U.S. memorials to presidents and war veterans, as well as celebrate the United States commitment to freedom and equality. Established in 1965, the National Mall was set up to protect and enrich the older park lands in the National Park System. The mammoth memorials speak of a great dedication to our country by founding fathers and war veterans. The Lincoln Memorial features a huge 19 foot tall marble likeness of 16th president Abraham Lincoln, immobilized in a sitting position, hands on the chair arms. Inside the columned, open air building are beautiful oil painting murals on canvas, hung on walls made of stone from the south - Georgia white marble, Tennessee pink marble, and Alabama marble. At the other end of the mall is the Washington Memorial, shaped like an Egyptian obelisk and standing over 555 feet tall. This monument was finished in 1884 and honors George Washington, the US's first president who led our country to independence. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president and the only one to serve 4 terms and Thomas Jefferson, third president of the US and principal author of the Declaration of Independence also have impressive statues memorializing the commitment to their country. It's beautiful to observe the National Mall and memorials at dusk and when it is dark. The lighting is done appropriately and it almost holds you more in awe of the incredible men of our history. Memorials to the US armed forces who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War are somber reminders of the service to our country. Spend a day here, and get a good walk, or take a drive at dusk to see what artists have done to remember the great ones of our country.
