For a city that's famous for history and U.S. national monuments, it's pretty incredible that such an amazing park as the U.S. National Arboretum exists. When you want to enjoy the great outdoors and your apartment courtyard doesn't do the trick, take a short drive to this beautiful park. Located in Northeastern D.C., the gorgeous 446 acre park was created by an Act of Congress in 1927. An arboretum, for those of you needing definition, is a living museum that showcases shrubs, trees and herbaceous plants for education and reasearch. Thousands of plant collections exist on the grounds, and something is always in bloom. To find out exactly what is available, or to locate a specific plant, ask for assistance from the receptionist at the visitor center. Some of the collections at the arboretum include the Dogwood Collection (where you can host a beautiful spring wedding), the Azalea Collection, Asian Collection, Fern Valley, National Boxwood Collection and the Friendship Garden and Herb Garden. These are just a few of the stunning exhibits of natural beauty at the park. Make time to visit A Capitol Idea there, where original U.S. Capitol columns, built in 1828 and moved to the park just ten or so years ago stand supporting the sky in a cool exhibit. In addition to the visitor center, a gift shop, various food carts, restrooms and water fountains are located throughout the park. Guided tours are available when scheduled in advance, and a tram tour is a great way to see the park. Reservations must be made for the 35 minute pre-recorded audio tour and the cost is just $4 for adults. The U.S. National Arboretum is a great escape from city life, to read, play or just take a nap.
