What is the history of Camarillo?

The Chumash Indians inhabited Camarillo for thousands of years. In the early 1800s, Mexico gained independence from Spain, leading to a land grant issued for the region that is now Camarillo. Jose Pedro Ruiz established the area, then called Rancho Calleguas, in 1837. The town itself was first founded in 1910, with St. Mary Magdalen Church at the center of it. The area continued to grow around the church and through the development of the surrounding region. Industry moved into the area, along with agriculture, especially after World War II. 

How is the weather in Camarillo?

Its location makes Camarillo one of the best places to live. The area has a Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures in the summer around 75 to 79 degrees. In the winter months, temperatures can drop to around an average of 40 to 45 degrees. The area only gets about 15 inches of rain a year, making it a rather dry area to live in. Spring and fall are both moderate temperature periods with cool breezes and the most rain during the year. The city has one of the best climates in the region, and it is well known for that, often attracting people during the colder months as tourists.

How do I get around town?

For those who live in Camarillo apartments, getting around is rather easy to do. The VCTC Intercity offers a bus that runs from Camarillo to various cities in the area, including the Warner Center. There is also a trolley that operates in the city itself during the day to provide transportation around the city itself. The city is also home to the Camarillo Airport, a public airport about three miles from the center of the city and typically services private planes. Finally, the Pacific Surfliner is a train station that operates in the city that runs from San Luis Obispo to San Diego. For those who live here, it is a rather walkable city, and getting around from shops to dining is not a challenge in many of the smaller neighborhoods here.

What is the Camarillo commute like?

The major freeway through the city is 101, which runs west to east through the heart of the city. State Route 34 bisects the city from north to south. Traffic along these routes can be difficult during the morning hours (7 am to 9 am) and then later in the day (3 pm to 6 pm). Other major streets in the city include Las Posas Road, Ponderosa Drive, and W. Ventura Blvd. 

What are the local media outlets?

When living in the apartments in Camarillo, there are a number of radio stations to tune in to, including KMRO, a local Spanish Christian station, KCAQ, a local classic hits station, and KCLU, a public radio station. Numerous others from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica also get connections. Located on the Oxnard Plain, the city of Camarillo is perhaps one of the best places to live for those who want to be close to the water. It is just nine miles from the Pacific Ocean, and though this area has a mixture of suburban lifestyle and rural areas, it is an exceptional place to live, work, raise a family, or just spend time. It is the fourth largest city in the county and is considered one of the safest cities in the state. 

What Camarillo landmarks should I see?

The Camarillo Ranch is a 6,000 square-foot house that's been restored to the early history of the area. There's also Old Town Camarillo, which is the area where the original components of the city were laid out in 1910. There are a number of restaurants and artisan shops in this area now. The Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum is located on Las Posas Road and provides a look at history from pre-historic times through the 20th century. It has some great artifacts from early settlers of the area. The city is also home to the Commemorative Air Force, Southern California Wing, which includes a WWI aviation museum. 

What is there to do around Camarillo?

For those living in apartments in Camarillo, there's plenty to do, such as shopping at Camarillo Premium Outlets, one of the most desirable shopping areas in LA. A visit to the Camarillo Public Library provides access to not just stunning architecture that dates back to 1919 but also books, movies, and CDs on file. It also sponsors a range of activities each year. The city has 22 neighborhood parks to explore as well as two private and two public golf courses. This area also features a YMCA facility and a community pool, keeping residents busy throughout the year.

Any annual festivals or Camarillo events to know?

Camarillo residents enjoy a wide range of events throughout the year. That includes the Farmers' Market, which is present in the Old Town area of the city every Saturday morning. During the summer months, Concerts in the Park take place in Constitution Park. The city also offers numerous events throughout the year, including the Camarillo Fiesta and Street Fair, the Ventura County Greek Festival, and the California Strawberry Festival, all located in the city or nearby.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

For those who wish to take a short drive from Camarillo to explore the surrounding area, it's not hard to find things to do. For beach trips, visit Point Mugu Beach and Sycamore Cove Beach. The Los Padres National Forest is a short drive up north and offers many areas of dense forests and hiking trails. A drive up I-5 allows for exploring cities like Bakersfield and San Francisco. It's also only a short drive into Mexico. It is also possible to make a trip to one of several of the area's national parks, including Death Valley National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and the Joshua Tree National Park. Within three hours of the city are a number of fantastic opportunities, with Disneyland, Palm Springs, San Diego, and Knott's Berry Farm all available. There are also several ski resorts in the area. 

Where is the best place to move in Camarillo?

You can find apartments in Camarillo in various areas of the city. Many people live in the area along Ponderosa Drive, which is in the center of the city. There are a number of fantastic communities near the Ventura Freeway, including along Las Posas Road. There are also a number of areas in development, including the Camarillo Promenade area and the Paseo Camino Real area.
