Whether you love fishing, golfing, surfing or shopping, this resort-based area has something for everyone. There are also various museums to visit and an array of delicious foods to indulge in. When you live in one of our apartments in Fort Walton Beach, you will have a fantastic time throughout the year.
The “mound builders” were native to the area before Europeans came to the area. The first were Spaniards and later on, John Andersen became one of the first people who settled on a plot of land near Fort Walton Beach in 1838. Before being referred to as Fort Walton Beach, this place had several name changes, including Andersen and Camp Walton. Although founded in 1937, the town was officially established in 1953 and the name would be permanently known as it is today.
Because of its in the region of Choctawhatchee Bay, the climate of Fort Walton Beach is warm and humid. During the spring, from February to the latter part of May, the weather is generally warm. It is hot and rainy between the summer months of late May to the middle of September. Fall and winter months are usually comfortable and mild. Snow and ice are extremely rare in this area.
Individuals have plenty of options for getting around Fort Walton Beach. Northwest Florida Regional Airport is close to the beaches and tourist area of downtown where multiple shops and the beaches are located. The airport offers shuttle services, limousines, taxis, bus transportation, rental cars and more. Also, there is the Okaloosa County Transit (OCT) bus service that travels around the city and stops at notable places and organizations.
Three major highways spans Fort Walton Beach. The first is U.S. Route 98, which is the longest roadway in Florida and runs all the way from Alabama through the heart of Fort Walton Beach and beyond. The other two thoroughfares are State Road 85 and 189 that connects to the uptown and downtown areas.
The primary newspaper for Fort Walton Beach and the surrounding areas is the Walton Sun, it is published every Saturday and is geared toward entertainment and society information. On its corresponding website (waltonson.com), they provide the latest content every day for matters dealing with local and global news. For people who rather listen to the radio there are a variety of stations to choose from including , 93.3 FM, WNCV—Adult Contemporary, 99.5 FM, WKSM—Classic Rock, 105.5 FM, WYZB—Country, 105.1 FM, WASJ—Sports, 1260 AM, and WFTW—News/Talk. Also, there are cable channels serving the area, which include Dish Network, Cox Communications and DirecTV.
Often referred to as the Emerald Coast because of its enchanting greenish-blue tinted waters, Fort Walton Beach is a magnet for tourists. Downtown and uptown are filled with places of interest and activities for everybody. With the great weather and the feeling of a small community, “snowbirds” are known to make their permanent homes here and some live in Fort Walton Beach apartments.
This seaside town has many attractions that compels people to make this one of their vacation spots in the Sunshine State. Individuals love taking a stroll on the Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island, where they can shop at the fashionable stores and antique outlets lining the beachfront, as well as dine on delicious food and drinks. The nightlife around Fort Walton Beach is exuberant, especially in the summer, with vacationers frequenting the numerous clubs and bars located in the area.
Pointing back to the days when pirates navigated through the region, the celebration of the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival brings the locals and tourists together for nautical hijinks. The three-day festival evolved from a Labor Day show in 1953 and the theme was well-received and grew more popular each year. These days, the event lasts for a week and there are parades, including The Grand TorchLight and The Coronation Pageant. Tasty food, extravagant costumes and fireworks are features of this Mardi Gras type of occasion. Dog Daze is an annual event sponsored by veterinarian services that provides entertainment for canines and their owners. Folks can expect doggie crafts, parades, giveaways and other goodies catering to their best friends.
Approximately an hour away from Fort Walton Beach, you will find the community of Seaside. It became famous as the place that The Truman Show was filmed. Seaside is located on Florida’s Panhandle and is considered environmentally friendly because of its carefully constructed design. It has plenty of space for people to walk or cycle throughout the town. The architectural buildings and structures of the town is renown in the U.S. Seaside is definitely picturesque. On Saturday mornings, cooking classes and demonstrations pertaining to gardening are held at the Farmers Market. While there, people can browse the local products including fresh produce and bakery items. Also, there are art galleries to explore and various places to indulge your palate. Pensacola is another vacation spot that individuals can travel to within an hour. Once there, they can take the Pensacola Hop-on Hop-off Tour. It is a real treat for those who have never been to Pensacola. The guide takes people on a journey through the old historical neighborhood and other unique landmarks.
As Fort Walton Beach is a resort town with beautiful weather, historical places, great restaurants, shopping, clubs and friendly people, living anywhere in this area is wonderful.
