Hilliard Overview

Hilliard, Ohio is a suburb of the Columbus metropolitan area, located just 9 miles North West of Columbus, Ohio in Franklin county. The town has a population of just over 35 thousand people, with 10% of the population being of retirement age. The average age of residents in this community is 37, indicative of a large working-age community home to many young families and schools. More than half of the population of Hilliard are married couples and the average household size in Hilliard has 3 people, again indicating the popularity of this area for young families.

What is the history of Hilliard?

Hilliard was founded in 1853. The town was founded by John Reed Hilliard, who initiated the development of the town by purchasing 10 acres of farmland and creating plans for parcels to accommodate families and community development. The post office was opened in 1854. Hilliard became incorporated as a village in 1869 and was officially recognized as a city as of December 1960. It was in 1960 when the population first crossed 5,000. There are now more than 35,000 people living in the area. The railroad station made up the heart of Hilliard for the longest time. Main street was added to cross the train tracks, and the railroad station operated until 1962 and brought all of the heart of the business of the city to where the people now are. The population of Hilliard exploded after the 1950s when there was a huge migration boom into Hilliard.

How is the weather in Hilliard?

The climate in Hilliard is temperate and average for what is common throughout Ohio. There is an average temperature in the winter months of between 20 to 36 degrees F. Over the summer that temperature will increase to daily averages of 65 to 85 degrees F. Spring and Fall will consistently see temperature ranges from the low 40s to the mid-60s daily.

How do I get around town?

Most people who live in Hilliard own a car. Hilliard is a very busy city that has a large number of traffic-laden roadways, including a highway system that many people rely on daily. Less than one percent of Hilliard’s population relies on utilizing public transportation. The Rickenbacker International Airport offers close access to air travel for Hilliard residents.

Hilliard is located just a few miles outside of Columbus. Many people who live in Hilliard work in Columbus, and so there is a common commute between the two cities. The average commute time for residents of Hilliard is 23 minutes. There are plenty of industry opportunities within the boundaries of Hilliard, in addition to work opportunities in Columbus. In addition to commuting, there are opportunities to bike or walk to work or to utilize public transport. These options are not as heavily utilized.

As a suburb of a major city area and a big network area, Hilliard benefits from having access to all of the media outlets that are connected to the greater Columbia area.

The city of Hilliard has a strong education system with highly regarded public schools. The city has flipped back and forth between “red” and “blue” during the last few elections. In general, the area is considered a strong community with strong neighborhoods that provide a warm sense of place and provide a strong sense of home.

Hilliard is home to several unique landmarks, including the second-largest First Responders Park in the entire country, as well as the Heritage Rail Trail, which is a unique hiking experience. Hilliard is also home to a flag pole from the World Trade Center that is not in a museum, and this is the only one of the kind on display like this anywhere in the world.

What is there to do around Hilliard?

There are two public pools in Hilliard, including the Hilliard Family Aquatic Center and the Clyde “Butch” Seidle Community Pool. There is also a Splash Pad at Hilliard’s Station Park. There are almost too many baseball and soccer fields to count in the area! There are also many basketball and other recreational courts in town, as well as 27 state operated parks. There are 41 multipurpose trails throughout Hilliard that provide amazing hiking and biking opportunities for the entire family.

Any annual festivals or Hilliard events to know?

Hilliard has several annual festivals that are some of the best annual festivals in all of Ohio. The fourth of July festivities in Hilliard are locally famous. Hilliard hosts a grand parade and moderately-sized firework display over the westside pool. There is also an annual fair every July called the Franklin County Fair. In 2017 this fair celebrated its 100th anniversary. This is a huge deal throughout Hilliard and is something that everyone in town goes to. Throughout the summer there is a weekly concert series downtown at the Station Park in the historic district called Celebration at the Station. This along with the Old Hilliard Art and Street Fair make up the big attractions in Old Hilliard. The art festival goes throughout the fall.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

There are many different options for vacations from Hilliard, including remote getaways and urban escapes. Hilliard is located close to Columbus and is an easy drive to many other vacation destinations in the area, including Lake Erie which is just a short drive outside of Columbus.  Hocking Hills is another gorgeous lakeside escape that has old-fashioned homes from the 1840s that can be rented for the weekend. There are countless options across the Ohio countryside that showcase lakes, woodlands and beautiful gardens. Detroit is also just a short drive from Columbus and is home to a great deal of history and can be a fun weekend get-away from the Hilliard area.
