Paterson Overview

The largest city in Passaic County and the third most populated in the entire great state of New Jersey, Paterson is a popular Garden State destination that acts as home to almost 150,000 proud residents. Known as 'Silk City' for its long history as a production hub of industry, this blue collar and diverse hot spot is an excellent way to get to experience first hand all that NJ has to offer.

What is the history of Paterson?

Initially formed as a township in the early 1800s, Paterson truly came into its own in 1861 via incorporation. Utilizing the nearby waterways to its advantage, the city grew quickly around textile mills in the early 1900s, and Hinchliffe Stadium opened its doors to sporting event fans in 1932. Paterson helped in the World War II effort by manufacturing airplane engines and more, and throughout the 1980s the city was known as a retail shopping center. Today, this on-the-move east coast city remains a dynamic and culturally-diverse region, complete with a solid economic base and plenty of support for the arts.

How is the weather in Paterson?

Winters can be cold and prone to snow, while those residing in Paterson apartments can expect hot and often humid summers. April showers are the norm, and autumn tends to be quite pleasant indeed, marked by crisp and cool evenings and pleasant afternoons.

How do I get around town?

NJ Transit provides plenty of bus stops throughout the city, and rail service is also available, running to a number of Paterson stops. A train also runs into Grand Central Terminal, allowing easy access to the Big Apple and further transfers to JFK Airport. Still, a majority of those residing in Paterson apartments claim ownership of at least one personal car or truck.

What is the Paterson commute like?

Interstate 80 and the Garden State Parkway both serve as major roadways in the city, and with close to 200 square miles to its credit, Paterson contains numerous options when it comes to traversing the city. State Routes 4 and 23 also zig-zag the city limits, and getting around the downtown scene is generally smooth-moving on most days. Still, those commuting to larger job markets can expect steady gridlock on both the GSP and I-80 thanks to their popularity and convenience.

What are the local media outlets?

Almost every major broadcasting network is reached with ease in Paterson rentals, thanks to a wide array of nearby affiliates, and radio runs the gamut from political talk to modern rock, classical to college radio indie favorites. The 'Wall Street Journal' and the 'New York Times' are both widely read in the city, although Paterson lays claim to numerous local art and event listing periodicals as well.

Why live in Paterson, NJ?

Steeped in history, Paterson apartment life is a fantastic way to get to know New Jersey. Brimming with east coast pride and offering much in the way of local arts, entertainment and shopping, this hotspot of diversity contains just about every walk of life when it comes to its budding population, from retirees to college students, career-centered working singles to growing blue collar families. When it comes to life in the Garden State, it doesn't get much more authentic than Paterson.

What Paterson landmarks should I see?

Explore Lambert Castle, which dates back to the late 1800s, or swing by Westside Park and visit an actual submarine, which is open for tours most days. The Great Falls of the Passaic River is easily the most prominent landmark in the area, hugely popular with tourists and an important part of the city's claim as 'Silk City'. The Eastside Historical District is also chock full of impressive homages to a time gone by, and makes an excellent walking tour for anyone calling a Paterson rental home.

What is there to do around Paterson?

Grab a swim in the Lou Costello Pool, or stroll along the scenic Levine Reservoir, both easily reached from numerous apartments for rent in Paterson. Grab a slice at Emerson Pizza, or enjoy a romantic dinner for two at Lezzet after an afternoon of shopping at area retail shops.

Any annual festivals or Paterson events to know?

Oktoberfest brings out the beer lovers every fall, and the nearby Fair Lawn Craft Show is an excellent opportunity to outfit your entire new Paterson apartment with design accents.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The Big Apple and all of its Broadway shows is a short train ride away from many Paterson apartments. The Jersey shore also makes a great weekend escape, from Seaside Heights to Asbury Park.

Where is the best place to move in Paterson?

Whether you are in the market for a great family unit near Stoney Road or desire a single one-bedroom flush with amenities close to the Hillcrest region of town, Paterson apartments are available to meet a wide range of lifestyles and budgets. Start your hunt for the next ideal New Jersey apartment in your life!
