Tourism became popular by the 1880's, with the building of lush resorts that catered to residents of San Francisco. South Lake Tahoe grew because of the tourist industry, and it continues to thrive today because of the various resorts and recreational opportunities in the area throughout the year.

The best time for tourists in South Lake Tahoe is late June through late August, although the winter months see many skiers traveling to the area.

The area of South Lake Tahoe itself is full of vacation opportunities, although residents travel away from the area for vacation too. The city of San Francisco is about 3 1/2 hours away by car, and offers many opportunities for dining, sightseeing, and shopping. Eldorado National Forest isn't far away and a good destination for those that like camping, while Reno, Nevada offers casinos, shows, and exciting nightlife for those that are looking for an active vacation.

Where is the best place to move in South Lake Tahoe?

There are many small neighborhoods throughout South Lake Tahoe. Two of the more interesting areas for residents include Black Bart & Pioneer Village. Black Bart is one of the most desirable, as it is close to Highway 50 and the Pioneer Trail. Pioneer Village is a small neighborhood that offers a peaceful atmosphere.
