Spring Valley Overview

Apartment living in Spring Valley, NY is a small village in Rockland County, New York. It is a great alternative to apartment living in New York City. Not only is Spring Valley a more affordable option than NYC, but it’s also quieter and is good for raising a family. In fact, according to the most recent census, almost half of the town’s residents (42.5%) are families with young children. As a town that’s under a 1.5-hour drive from New York, Spring Valley offers a great opportunity to live a quiet life while being close to the Big Apple. With plenty of great restaurants and parks to enjoy, Spring Valley has a lot to offer on the weekends, too, especially if you're prepared to explore the surrounding area. 

What is the history of Spring Valley?

The city of Spring Valley was founded by Scottish settlers in 1842 and owes its beginnings to the coming of the steam railway to the area. The town grew and prospered throughout the second half of the nineteenth century, with a theater opening in 1919 and several schools opening during the 1920s. The town was a popular summer vacation destination for Jewish New Yorkers during the 1940s and became the home of a sizable Hasidic population after WWII. Today, Spring Valley enjoys a very diverse and balanced population. 

How is the weather in Spring Valley?

The weather in Spring Valley is representative of the New York state climate. Summers are hot and humid, with the hottest month of July routinely seeing temperatures above 83F and plenty of rain. Winters are very cold and snowy, January is the coldest month, with temperatures of 22F and lower common. The rest of the year is typically mild and partly cloudy. Spring Valley is not prone to extreme weather events. The most pleasant month in August, with warm temperatures but lower humidity than July.

How do I get around town?

The best way to get around Spring Valley is by car, especially if you want the option to explore the surrounding areas and state parks (there’s a lot to explore, so it’s definitely worth it). Having said that, Spring Valley has very good public transit options. There is a train station that can take you to New York City, a coach station, and a park-and-ride. If you prefer to walk, Spring Valley is a pretty good neighborhood for you. It has a walkability score of 64 - not amazing, but not at all bad. More than half of the city is walkable, which is more than your average town. What’s even better is that the air quality in this town has been rated ‘good’ for most of last year, with only one day of poor air quality. Getting around by bike might be a bit difficult, however. Spring Valley has a bike score of 49. Again, not terrible, but if you really love cycling, this might not be the best place to look for city apartments.  

What is the Spring Valley commute like?

The closest freeway to the city of Spring Valley is the I-87, which takes you pretty much straight into NYC. On a good day, you can get into New York in just over an hour from Spring Valley. Obviously, approaching NYC can land you in heavy traffic, especially on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. Expect traffic jams on the approach to NYC. It’s also worth noting that Spring Valley is conveniently located for commuting not just into NYC, but potentially into New Haven, CT (a trip of 73 miles or around 2 hours), or for exploring upstate New York. 

What are the local media outlets?

The Rockland County Times newspaper covers local Spring Valley news, Spring Valley is also covered in the New York section of major news outlets such as NBC and CBS. Spring Valley doesn’t currently have its own radio station, but it is within range of many major New York-based radio stations. It does have its own dedicated Facebook group. 

Why live in Spring Valley, NY?

Wondering what's special about Spring Valley and why you should seek out apartments in the city? The best thing about Spring Valley is definitely its location. It’s a nice, quiet neighborhood that is perfectly positioned for commuting into NYC or exploring upstate New York. It’s an affordable place for apartment living and has a great mix of people from different backgrounds. Sometimes Spring Valley gets called out for being a bit unexciting if you like events, but with so much going on just an hour away in New York, and so many nature spots to explore nearby, this is hardly the case.

What Spring Valley landmarks should I see?

The Town of Ramapo Cultural Arts Center was originally opened as the Spring Valley Cinema back in 1962. It now is both the town’s cinema and local arts center. The surrounding area also offers the Historical Society of Rockland County, a Holocaust museum, and the Houser-Conklin House, which is a historic home built in 1775.

What is there to do around Spring Valley?

We’ll be honest: although Spring Valley does have a local movie theater, it isn’t famous for its entertainment scene. However, the town is close to New York City that you have all the entertainment you could possibly want within an easy drive or train ride. Apartment residents here can enjoy coming back to a quiet, peaceful environment after a fun night out in the city. Or, if you feel like staying around locally, enjoy a dinner out in one of the area’s many great restaurants.  

Any annual festivals or Spring Valley events to know?

You’re spoiled for choice if you’re interested in exploring festivals in the area. The nearby town of Chestnut Ridge hosts an annual fall fair, while Yonkers, a little way down the Hudson, offers an annual whiskey fest. This is to say nothing of the myriad of festivals, music, community, and food related, run in NYC. There’s a huge choice in and around the city every weekend, so you’ll never be bored, no matter the time of year.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

If you love nature-centered vacations, you’ll absolutely love apartment living in Spring Valley. Go just about anywhere north of the city, and you’ll discover a ton of opportunities for hiking, river sports, cycling, golf, and more. Harriman State Park is our top pick: it’s only a 20-minute drive from Spring Valley, and you could spend days there. The park is huge and offers woodland hiking trails, camping spots, and lakes, some with beaches and boat launches. Speaking of beaches, head to the Nyack Beach State Park, on the River Hudson, to enjoy relaxing by the water, hiking, or skiing in winter. If you’re feeling more adventurous, head further north to the Catskills and Slide Mountain Wilderness. 

Where is the best place to move in Spring Valley?

If you’re looking for the perfect apartment in Spring Valley, look for apartments in the attractive apartment block communities in the southwest corner of the city. Kennedy Drive and surrounding roads are popular destinations for apartment living. The buildings are highly attractive, with spacious apartments, communal yards, and great views of the surrounding area. Spring Valley is a great place for people of any age and background, and so close to NYC that it is invaluable to commuters.
