West Lafayette Overview

West Lafayette, IN, situated on the mighty Wabash River in the northwestern part of the state, is one of Indiana?s most popular cities, being the home of Purdue University and many medical, tech, and research companies yet with the small-town feel and homespun outlook that the Hoosier state is famous for. Residents enjoy lots of entertainment, dining, and shopping choices in this diverse and vibrant college town. Being located just a couple of hours drive from both Chicago and Indianapolis makes the city a pleasant and convenient place to call home for those who commute to work in either town but don?t want to live there. An apartment in West Lafayette is a great choice for families and singles alike.

What is the history of West Lafayette?

In 1866 three small suburban towns on the outskirts of Lafayette decided to merge into one entity and originally named the new town Chauncey. In 1869 Purdue University opened its doors creating an urgent demand for improvements to infrastructure which the small town couldn?t afford. After the city of Lafayette refused to annex Chauncey, the town voted to change its name to West Lafayette in 1888. Fueled in its growth by the presence of the college and its location on the river, the city developed neighborhoods and institutions that are distinctly different and unique from Lafayette.

How is the weather in West Lafayette?

The midwestern weather can generally be described as mild. Temps stay in the mid-80s to low 90s in the summer with occasional thunderstorms and rainy days. Winters are usually wet and cold though it rarely gets below freezing, and you can expect several moderate snowfalls each year. Fall and spring are wonderful times to be outdoors in Indiana. Those living in a West Lafayette apartment can expect to enjoy a temperate climate year-round.

How do I get around town?

Most people who live in a West Lafayette apartment own a car, though many parts of the city with amenities and shopping are walkable and apartments can easily be found there. With lots of students around the city is bicycle and pedestrian friendly. There?s also a bus line called CityBus that will take you anywhere in town, and an Amtrak station. Purdue University operates its own airport, and Indianapolis International is about 65 miles away.

What is the West Lafayette commute like?

The main highway serving the city is Interstate 65 which crosses the entire state from north to south and is the main artery to both Indianapolis and Chicago. US 52 and US 231 run through the city as well as some state routes. Traffic is generally pretty moderate around town and on the highways until you get close to the larger cities.

What are the local media outlets?

Much of the news and media used by those in West Lafayette come from across the river in its sister city, but the city itself has a few outlets including WLFI-TV, a CBS television affiliate, and two radio stations, National Public Radio affiliate WBAA, located at Purdue University, and WLQQ FM. The college publishes a student newspaper, The Purdue Exponent.

Why live in West Lafayette, IN?

One of the biggest reasons to choose an apartment in West Lafayette is the people here. Midwestern values mean welcoming, friendly neighbors and friends. The climate is neither too hot nor cold, and there are plenty of employment opportunities nearby. Families will find it a good place to raise kids.

What West Lafayette landmarks should I see?

There?s a lot of history in this area, and Fort Ouiatenon, a restored French trading post built in 1717 is a favorite place to visit. The Purdue University Horticultural Gardens are a marvel to see, and Samara, a home built by Frank Lloyd Wright is a popular attraction.

What is there to do around West Lafayette?

There are many restaurants, stores, and nightclubs in and around the city, and people like to gather for food, drink, and fun in the Wabash Landing and Levee area which includes the Riverside Skating Area and a huge cinema. College sports in Mackey Arena and the Ross-Ade Stadium are a big draw, and the Haan Museum of Indiana Art and the Columbian Park Zoo are a short drive away.

Any annual festivals or West Lafayette events to know?

Feast of the Hunter?s Moon has become an Indiana autumn tradition drawing people from all over the state to participate in a recreation of the pioneer type rendezvous that took place each year at Fort Ouiatenon in the 18th century. The annual Starry Night Festival in downtown West Lafayette brings together residents and students alike for music, food, and drink. And there?s the Purdue University Homecoming celebration which includes a parade, a pep rally, and lots of antics.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

There are plenty of vacation destinations convenient to a West Lafayette apartment. Chicago is only a couple of hours north with all its cultural, dining, and shopping venues and posh hotels. For those who?d like to stay away from the big city, Indianapolis is a lot easier to get around in and has many wonderful museums and sites of historical interest, great shopping and dining, and several quaint and charming bed & breakfast inns in the Old Northside part of the city. There are also several state parks within easy driving distance.

Where is the best place to move in West Lafayette?

There are 18 distinct neighborhoods in West Lafayette. For those who want to be close to the college, University Farm would be a good choice. For a more upscale environment, Happy Hollow might be best. It?s a good idea to explore the city before you rent your apartment in West Lafayette.
