Alsip Overview
Located in Cook County, Alsip is a quaint and charming township located close to the big city excitement of Chicago. A historic locale of Illinois long since prized for its smaller city values and numerous amenities, Alsip is an idyllic slice of Midwestern life.
What is the history of Alsip?
At just less than 7 square miles in size and boasting a population of around 20K, Alsip retains a feel for its historic roots as a farming community. Taking its name from a pioneer of the brick industry in 1885, this proud Illinois city truly came into vogue with the addition of the Tri-State Tollway in 1959, and many of the German and Dutch architectural highlights of the 1800s remain intact today.
How is the weather in Alsip?
Illinois is known for its blustery and snow-filled winters, and Alsip is little exception. Springs tend to be quite pleasant, if a little rain-filled, while the summers are sunny and warm. Autumn is a great time of year, complete with crisp evening temperatures and plenty of leaf-peeping opportunities as they explode in color.
How do I get around town?
Most residents of Alsip apartments maintain at least one car or truck for getting around, although there is bus service available and nearby cities offer rail service to greater Chicago for commuters. Bicycling around the city has also recently become popular, with taxis and ride sharing options such as Uber also available. O'Hare Airport in Chicago proper remains the most popular choice for sky travel, with numerous domestic and international flights available daily.
What is the Alsip commute like?
Roadway 294 is far and away the most used travel option, with College Avenue running west to east across much of Alsip proper and acting as a default Main Street. Illinois traffic is notorious, and those commuting to the job market of Chicago and beyond can expect sluggish conditions on most high-volume travel times, especially early morning and late afternoon.
What are the local media outlets?
For print news, the 'Daily Herald' and the 'Chicago Tribune' are still the most widespread, although a number of select community papers exclusive to Alsip happenings exist. Radio and broadcast television are largely beamed in from affiliates in Chicago, and range from news oriented outlets such as FOX and CNN to musical genres ranging from modern rock to jazz.
Why live in Alsip, IL?
For those desiring a more small town feel without sacrificing any of the big city amenities that make life in Illinois so grand, Alsip apartments might just be an ideal fit. Both Griffith Laboratories and a Coca-Cola bottling plant call the city home, making it ideal for those in the manufacturing line of work, and local schools are consistently given high marks by educators.
What Alsip landmarks should I see?
A pair of highly recognizable water towers can be seen from the I-294 roadway, and Midlothian Meadows is a scenic slice of Illinois life that presents an excellent picnic opportunity. The nearby Bridgeview Park District is also chock full of historic hot spots.
What is there to do around Alsip?
The Wolfe Wildlife Refuge is an excellent place to get back to nature, offering a variety of wildlife and hiking trails. Burrito Jalisco is the place in the city for Tex-Mex cuisine, and Allgauer's is a fine dining establishment well-respected for its steaks and seafood. The nearby Imagination Station is yet another excellent place to take the kids, part museum and part creative exploration center.
Any annual festivals or Alsip events to know?
Hop in the car and hit the open road for nearby Wisconsin, home to a swatch of breweries and those oh-so-famous cheese curds, or try your luck with a fishing adventure across the majestic lakes of Illinois. Ohio's Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame is also within reach for the music lover on your list.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
An apartment in Alsip puts you front and center to a huge array of Chicago festivals, including Lollapalooza, the AV Club Comedy Festival and the music mecca of Riot Fest. Closer to home, holiday parades and local farmer's markets can be found with ease, and the Alsip Winter Carnival always draws a crowd.
Where is the best place to move in Alsip?
Whether you are on the hunt for a multi-bedroom family unit, complete with onsite gym and reserved parking, or are simply in the market for a single bedroom, economic efficiency that allows cats, we're confident that the perfect Alsip rental is ready and waiting for you. So why spend another day without all that life in Illinois has to offer? Start your quest for the next perfect place to call home today!
