Bronx Overview

Located in the northernmost tier of the five boroughs of New York City, The Bronx is an east coast destination known the world over. Synonymous with the Yankees, hip-hop and a truly distinct 'New York state of mind', residents of the tri-state area have been flocking to apartments in The Bronx for literally decades.

What is the history of Bronx?

The city of New York and its five boroughs was born proper in 1898, but it wasn't until 1912 that 'the Bronx' truly came into its own. Population in the area exploded leading up to 1930, with industry such as piano manufacturing and other blue collar jobs experiencing steady growth. Railroad access increased the desirability of the vicinity, and in the Bronx even hosted the World's Fair in 1919. Prohibition saw the rise of bootleggers throughout the borough, and the Great Depression saw an inevitable decline in the mighty city. Still, the Bronx is hard to keep down, and has shown a steady rise in growth since the 1960s. The 1980s and forward saw an especially fertile growth period, leading to the National Civic League to designate the area as an 'All American City' in 1997.

How is the weather in Bronx?

New York City in general is defined by four distinct seasons. Summers can be hot and humid affairs, while the spring and fall are generally dry and pleasant. Winters are often more mild than further upstate or along the outskirts of NJ and MA, although it is not uncommon for snow to occur and for below-freezing temperatures to make an appearance.

How do I get around town?

A majority of residents in the Bronx travel by public transportation, overwhelmingly via subway. The New York City subway systems is most impressive, stretching from borough to borough and even further outside the city via the hub of Metro-North at Grand Central Station. Buses are also a constant option, and the NYC taxi cab is an almost ever-present transportation convenience. Walking and bicycling are very popular among residents as well, as owning a car is not only expensive due to tolls and parking fees but also viewed as an annoyance due to the abundance of traffic in the city.

What is the Bronx commute like?

Traffic is a constant in New York City, and the Bronx is little exception in this regard. Park Avenue, Third Avenue and Broadway are the primary streets that intersect the grid system of the Bronx, while the Pelham Parkway and the Cross-Bronx Expressway both act as major highways. A large number or bridges and tunnels connect the Bronx to neighboring boroughs such as Queens and Manhattan, although again - most residents rely on the less-traffic prone subway system to get around.

What are the local media outlets?

WFUV is a long-running non-commercial radio station, broadcasting from the Bronx institution Fordham University. News 12 offers local televised updates on local issues, as well as a number of public broadcasting programs. The Riverdale Press is a regional newspaper that has won the coveted Pulitzer Prize.

Why live in Bronx, NY?

The appeal of the New York City is longstanding, often referred to as the 'greatest city in the world', and the Bronx has long been held in high-regard in popular culture. Films and literature have often alluded to the area's gritty and hard-working citizens, and the Bronx often lays claim to the destination that gave birth to hip-hop. The job market marks steady growth, and the housing prices tend to be much more affordable than Manhattan or Brooklyn. The Bronx also boasts a huge array of nightlife, eateries and entertainment options, as well as schools and shopping. With plenty of options in Bronx apartments available to rent, this is a great area to move to.

What Bronx landmarks should I see?

Edgar Allen Poe spent a number of years in the vicinity, and a visit to the Poe Cottage is a must for any literary fan. The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a world-renown institution gathering an impressive array of works, while the area Nautical Museum gathers historic items as well as fascinating lore of the Bronx gone-by. Yankee Stadium is an absolute must-see for even casual sporting fans, and a walking tour of the Bronx will yield a large number of historic landmarks that were crucial to the development of hip-hop as a dominant musical genre.

What is there to do around Bronx?

If you are bored in the Bronx then you are doing it wrong! A huge assortment of museums and cultural destinations are found with ease, from the Academy of Dance to the off-Broadway theaters that line the district. The Bronx Zoo is the largest of its kind in New York, and also one of the most expansive collections of wild animals in the entire nation. The number of world-class restaurants and nightclubs is almost impossible to calculate, and if residents somehow exhaust the options locally the rest of New York City is only a short train ride away!

Any annual festivals or Bronx events to know?

The Bronx plays home to a number of street fairs and festivals, from the Jazz-inspired Copa Festival to the annual fireworks-laden July 4th celebration. The City Island Arts and Crafts Festival also draws crowds from near and far every spring, while the summer Riverfest offers boat rides and even a knightly battle re-creation.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The Bronx lends itself to easy access to a number of vacation getaways. Hit the sun and surf of Rockaway Beach (yes, the same one from the Ramones song!), or head to Manhattan to take in all the bright lights of Broadway have to offer on 42nd Street. Of course, the Jersey shore is only a short commute away as well, or head upstate to the natural beauty of New York hotspots like New Paltz or Rhinebeck. The vacation options are seemingly limitless.

Where is the best place to move in Bronx?

The Bronx offers a huge array of apartment rental options, and locations can be as diverse as your needs. Morris Park area of the city plays home to a number of educational hubs, while the East Bronx contains the city's largest public park and affordable housing options. Castle Hill and Soundview are additional popular areas in which to reside, but wherever you end up it will distinctly be 'the Bronx'.
