The city of Chico sits at the North-Eastern extreme of the Sacramento Valley in California, between the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Sacramento River.

What is the history of Chico?

Originally populated by the Mechoopda Maidau Native Americans, the modern city of Chico dates back to the 1860s when the U.S. Army’s Lt. Colonel A.E. Hooker and his troops set up camp close to the town during the Civil War. Formally incorporated in 1872, the city developed through the building of the California and Oregon Railroad, the California State University, Chico, and the Chico Municipal Airport, which was formerly a US Army Airbase.

How is the weather in Chico?

Chico and the Sacramento Valley as a whole generally enjoy a benevolent, Mediterranean type climate. Summers tend to be hot and dry, with average temperatures exceeding 90 Fahrenheit, but winters are mild, with typical daily highs in the 50s and 60s and somewhat higher, though still moderate, amounts of rain. Meteorological data also places the Sacramento Valley as one of the sunniest places in the USA, claiming a 188 clear days per year and 78% sunshine.

How do I get around town?

Chico can be reached through both Sacramento International Airport and Chico Municipal Airport. The city also has an Amtrak rail station and is served by the Butte Regional Transit (B-Line) which offers frequent bus services to numerous destinations around the city and Butte County.

What is the Chico commute like?

It’s easy to get downtown, and once you’re there Chico is a flat, compact, attractive city with easy parking, and numerous great stores and restaurants. It’s a walkable city, committed to increasing the number of bike lanes available to both residents and visitors, but traditional cabs and pedicabs are also readily available.

What are the local media outlets?

Chico is home to numerous high profile media outlets, including such newspapers as the Chico Enterprise Record and the Chico Examiner. The Chico campus of the California State University also publishes the Orion newspaper and runs the KCHO FM local radio station. KPAY AM 1290 is another local station which has been broadcasting news and talk radio shows to Chico and North California since 1949. As to entertainment, Chico is home to the Chico News & Review, the Empirical Magazine, and the TV stations KCVU TV 20, KHSL TV 12 and KUCO TV 27.

" Chico’s answer to Germany’s Octoberfest is its annual “Artoberfest”, which features live music, numerous exhibitions and art fairs of all kinds. But all year round just a few dollars will buy you a great night out at the El Rey Theatre on W 2nd Street."

A mere 10 miles from Chico, the Sacramento River, the largest in California, flows south for almost 400 miles from its source in the Klamath Mountains to San Francisco Bay. The river and its beautiful tree-lined surroundings offer numerous recreational opportunities including rafting, swimming, canoeing, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking and camping. In Butte Creek Canyon, the 100 year old Honey Run Covered Bridge gives tremendous views of the natural beauty of California. Based in Oroville, just 21 miles from Chico, Forebay offers rentals for kayaking, pedal boats and boards, rowboats and canoes.
