The First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth was established in 1668 as the only English language church in New Jersey but was burned to the ground by British Loyalists in 1780. However, its historic cemetery remains to this day. Elizabeth was the focal point of a major attack by the British during the War for Independence and during the 19th Century it was an industrial hub. The Singer Sewing Machine company set up in Elizabeth and by the end of the century an electric car manufacturing plant was operating as well.

Elizabeth, like all of New Jersey enjoys the full bloom and brunt of the four season.
