Fridley Overview
From its start in 1949 as a small village located within Anoka County, Minnesota, Fridley, MN has grown into a vibrant city with a population of nearly 30,000 as recorded during the 2010 census. Conveniently positioned on the southeastern border of Minnesota, it is now a 'first ring' suburb near the bustling, commercial and residential area known as the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. If you are considering apartment home living in Fridley, MN, you will find the city is conveniently located near both friendly suburban neighborhoods and energetic urban lifestyles.
What is the history of Fridley?
Even though the very first Fridley establishment was the Banfill Tavern which was built in 1847 (by John Banfill) within the area that was previously known as Manomin, the city is actually named after Abram M. Fridley. Fridley is considered the first settler in Manomin. In 1879, the Minnesota State Legislature changed the area's name to Fridley and in 1957 The Village of Fridley was established as a Home Rule Charter City. The 60s bought an industrial boom to the area and the city's population grew to 15,182 residents. But, it was in 1965 when two devastating F4 tornadoes tore through Fridley and destroyed or damaged nearly 1 in every 4 homes. As a testament to the community's determination and the leadership of then-Mayor Nee, the city was rebuilt and still prospers today.
How is the weather in Fridley?
Since Fridley, MN is located in the southernmost part of Anoka County, the climate is very similar to that of nearby Minneapolis. The location enjoys hot (and sometimes humid) summers that are typical of southernmost Midwestern states. Expect plenty of sunshine, as Fridley averages 198 sunny days per year compared to a national average of 205 days per year. And like many Midwestern states, you can expect Fridley, MN to experience cold winter days with about 53 inches of snow each year. This makes for a city that boasts year-round outdoor sporting activities, along with lovely transitional weather that includes flower-scented spring rains and dramatic fall foliage around the second week of October.

For local residents that frequently commute into the Twin Cities metro area, it only takes 11 minutes by car, taxi, or Uber to cover the 9.2 road miles. For a faster trip to work from the suburbs, hop on a rail commuter train at Fridley Station located on downtown Main Street - which also features park and ride lots and bicycle lockers for hybrid commuting.
What is the Fridley commute like?
If you work outside the city, you will have three main routes to enter and exit. Interstate 694 in the northern portion of the 72 mile long Minneapolis-St. Paul beltway system which connects Fridley with communities like Brooklyn Park, New Brighton, and White Bear. Minnesota State Highway 47 runs north and south between Minneapolis and Champlin, MN, along with State Highway 65 which is a four-lane expressway which serves as one of the main routes through Fridley. When crossing the Mississippi River, the I-694 bridge is the only direct connection to the city. Expect a busy commute during rush hours, but otherwise traffic flows well into and out of the city. Another option is the BNSF Railway's main track line that passes through Fridley, into the Twin Cities and on towards the Portland/Seattle area.
What are the local media outlets?
