Odessa Overview
Since the early twentieth century, Odessa has been considered a “boom town” for its access to oil and other natural resources. This has led it to become one of the most bullish job markets in the entire country. The city is growing rapidly and the community comes together throughout the year with fun and free festivals and other activities. This expansion is creating a melting-pot effect as more people begin to flow in from all over the country making it an exciting time to own or rent an apartment in Odessa!
What is the history of Odessa?
Founded in 1881, Odessa was originally developed as a convenient location along the Texas and Pacific Railway to resupply and ship cattle, as was the major export at the time in the area. When oil was discovered here in 1927, the city was incorporated and the population began to grow rapidly. The area has remained a draw for its booming oil industry through the twentieth century and into today.
How is the weather in Odessa?
Daytime temperatures throughout the year rarely fall below 55 degrees, while the majority of the nearly 7-month summers see temperatures well into the 90’s. Due to the region’s semiarid climate, however, these high temperatures are more tolerable than other humid parts of the state. In winter, nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, but typically stay warmer on average.
How do I get around town?
Despite its rural location, Odessa shares an international airport with the nearby city of Midland only ten miles from the city center. Odessa also boasts an extensive EZRider bus system with 6 routes that cover most of the city as well as an intercity line which can take commuters to Midland. While this may add to the convenience of getting around, most residents still prefer to own a car in Odessa.
What is the Odessa commute like?
The area continues to be a convenient crossing for many travelers with 9 interstates and highways. The major east-west expressway is Interstate 20 which moves traffic all the way from Dallas, past the airport, and eventually connects with Interstate 10. Other local roads include Loop 338, which wraps around the entire city connecting to every other highway in the area, and US 385, also known as Andrews Highway, takes commuters north.
What are the local media outlets?
The local newspaper is the Odessa American. Many radio stations cater to the religious and Spanish markets, but all genres are accounted for with Midland/Odessa’s 103.3 KISS FM providing Top-40, My Country 96.1, and KXWT 91.3 for West Texas’ public talk radio. All major television networks are available to residents living in Odessa apartments, including KMID (ABC), KOSA (CBS), KWES (NBC), and KPEJ (FOX).
Why live in Odessa, TX?
People search for apartments in Odessa to be a part of one of the fastest-growing small cities in America. Still known as an “energy town” with its sister city to the north, Midland, the boom in this industry has continued to influence record-high job growth, up to 60%. Residents have also seen their incomes increase by almost 100% since 2000. As the rest of the country relies heavily on natural resources, Odessa’s in the prime location within the Permian Basin to continue to be its supplier.
What Odessa landmarks should I see?
From the moment you begin your search for apartments in Odessa, you will notice that the city takes great historical pride. Multiple theaters have been preserved from their inception in the 1950’s and the White-Pool House, Odessa’s oldest structure, still stands after almost 130 years. The city is home to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and Odessa College, a local community college. On the University of Texas’ campus, you can find an exact replica of the Stonehenge.
What is there to do around Odessa?
Odessa became a mainstream attraction after the Ratliff Stadium was featured in the hit movie Friday Night Lights. The stadium is home to the Permian Panthers and Odessa Bronchos’ high school football teams, a very popular spectator activity in the area, and is the 7th largest high school stadium in the state. In downtown, you can visit The Permian Playhouse which features shows of every type from music, comedy, and dance, to theatrical performances. Odessa also features many different bars and lounges to visit at night, a majority of which are found near the university, but others can be found throughout the city. There are also a wide variety of restaurants featuring many ethnic cuisines from Italian to Mexican.
Any annual festivals or Odessa events to know?
Throughout the year, the city teams up with local business to provide entertainment for the masses, free of charge. During the summer, there are pool parties, in the fall is the annual Fall Festival, and in winter is the Jingle Bell Jog, the city’s annual fun run.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Depending on your mood, the vast network of highways in and around the city can take you in almost any direction. If you desire an urban escape, both Austin and Dallas are a short 5-hour road trip away, with Austin being the cultural hub of the state and Dallas being the capitol and home to the Dallas Cowboys. If you’re looking for a little more adventure, Mexico is only 3 hours away, but many stop just short and visit the beautifully scenic Big Bend National Park located along the Rio Grande.
Where is the best place to move in Odessa?
With it’s convenient access to the Music City Mall, the University of Texas, and low crime rate, the east side of Odessa is where many who are looking for apartments in Odessa choose to live. This part of town also features the city’s highest rated elementary school, Reagan Elementary, and one of the state’s high school football powerhouses, Permian High School.
