The city of Opa Locka, FL, is within Miami-Dade County. It has a population of over 15,000 people. The city itself spans about 4.2 square miles, making it rather small overall compared to other cities. It's located in the northwestern area of the county, providing great access to the region's amenities. It offers a range of amenities, including beautiful parks, cultural areas, and stunning architecture. There's a shopping and restaurant area and good access to the highway to travel. What is the history of Opa Locka?

The city was founded in 1926 by Glenn Curtiss, an aviation pioneer. From its beginning, it had a Moorish architectural style to it, though much of that was damaged by a hurricane in the early years. There are 20 Moorish Revival buildings in the city listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Perhaps what the city is most well known for is that it was where Amelia Earhart launched her trip around the world, which happened at the Miami Municipal Airport just to the south of the city. 

How is the weather in Opa Locka?

Opa Locka has a warm climate much of the year. Thanks to its location in Florida, those who live here are likely to enjoy mild winters and very hot summer months. It's not uncommon for January weather to range from a low of 58 degrees to a high of 76 degrees, on average. January usually sees under 2 inches of rain. That's the coldest month of the year. Summers can be much hotter, ranging from an average high of 91 degrees in August to an average low of 76 degrees. The wettest time of the year is generally June to July, when the area can see as much as 8 inches of rain. It's typical for the days to be warm and humid here, though light breezes in the evenings and a rain shower are not uncommon at any point of the year. 

How do I get around town?

Some areas of Opa Locka are walkable, especially near many of the apartments in Opa Locka. There are also the Miami-Dade Transit busses that have routes throughout the city. The Oka-locka Station. Fairs are available for most routes throughout the area. Senior citizen discounts are also typically available. Additionally, those who are planning to travel can access the Opa-locka Executive Airport. This airport is managed by the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department. Many people who live in the city own and operate a vehicle to get around, though that's not always necessary depending on where you live. Some of the apartments here are close to area restaurants and shops.

What is the Opa Locka commute like?

Many residents in Opa-locka commute to and from work throughout the region. The most common rush hours are from 8 am to 9 am and again from 5:30 to 7 pm each day, Monday through Friday. Though many work in the city itself, the city is right off I-95, which provides a lot of flexibility in getting around here. Other major routes in the city include Route 932, 826, and 817. These are the main thoroughfares through the city leading to the flea marketing, the shopping district, and the airport. Residents may also use State Route 27 and 441 to get to the Miami International Airport to the south of Pembroke Park to the north. 

What are the local media outlets?

The Opa Locka Review is the primary source of news and communications in the city. It provides a daily newspaper to residents, with subscriptions and an online portal for news in the city and the surrounding area. The Miami Herald is also available in the area, providing regional news as well as local news. The city's website provides live streaming and videos from government events and activities for very local news. A number of radio stations are available here too, including 89.7, 90.5, and 90.9. Local television stations that serve the area include WFOR, WPTV, and WTVJ.

Many areas are walkable, with close proximity to the freeway, which makes it easy enough to get around the region. There are numerous landmarks and historical sites throughout the region. Perhaps the most notable is Opa Locka Old City Hall, which was built in the 1920s. This building's cultural influences were prominent throughout the area, and it offers impressive architecture. The Harry Hurt Building is also a historic building in the area. The Amelia Earhart Final Take Off is a local treasure in terms of the history of this area. Other notable landmarks here include the Freedom Tower, a popular work location, and the Spanish Monastery, which is available for tours and is designed after European churches. 

What is there to do around Opa Locka?

Perhaps the best thing for those who love the outdoors is to visit Amelia Earhart Park, with its playground, open green space, and water. For those who want to enjoy some shopping and dining, the Biscayne Blvd area is a palm-lined area with some vintage shops to explore. It's also only a short drive to the Everglades National Park. It's not uncommon for those planning a visit to the Everglades to rent a hotel in Opa Locka to do so. Take a tour of the St. Thomas University Miami Gardens that date to the 1960s, or visit the Leah Arts District nearby. 

Any annual festivals or Opa Locka events to know?

There are numerous festivals that take place throughout the region, though fewer are actually in the city of Opa Locka. One annual event is the Conga Loca Hispanic Street Festival which brings together food, dancing, and music from international stars as well as local groups. Other events include Earth Day Festivals, Mother's Day events, and annual carnivals, some of which are hosted by local religious groups in the area.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Its location makes it easy for those living in Opa Locka, FL apartments to take nearby trips to area parks and cities. For example, Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce are only about 90 miles from the city. For those who want to take a short flight, a trip to Freeport in the Bahamas or Marco Island may find the area ideal. Other locations include Naples, which is about 95 miles from the city, and Bonita Sprints, which is about 100 minutes away. Numerous national parks are nearby as well, including Oleta River State Park, Biscayne National Park, and the Everglades National Park. 

Where is the best place to move in Opa Locka?

Opa-Locka has an urban mix that blends single-family homes with numerous apartment and condo complexes. Some are high-rise apartments, though many are mid-rise locations. Many of the apartments in the city are along Route 916, including near NW 32nd Avenue and down to NW 22nd Avenue. There are also a number of apartment communities located on Route 9. These range widely in their features and overall amenities. Some smaller locations exist in this area as well, including near Ali Baba Avenue, NW 135th Street, and NW 127th Street.
