The location is fantastic - particularly if you work on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, at the Pentagon, or in Arlington proper. Access to ingress/egress routes (US 50, I-395, etc) is immediate, though it is easy to avoid them all when trying to dodge morning and evening traffic. Just around the block (literally) is a boutique grocery, a yoga studio, a salon, and a series of great restaurants (ranging from pizza to a Mediterranean cafe). ...stop. Make it a quarter hour and you can reach gyms, a vibrant bar scene, shopping, multiple grocery stores, a movie theater, and boodles of restaurants.
The buildings themselves date from WWII and were built as military barracks or offices. They max out at three floors - great for those that don't enjoy waiting on elevators or hiking up tons of stairs on the daily. With the buildings being lower set (unlike the high rises in downtown Arlington), ample space exists in the immediate area for parking just outside the small courtyards that lead up to individual entrances. Lots are available for reservation ($125/month for your own space), though most are first-come, first-served for residents only. Public parking, both free and metered are available as close as 100 feet from your front door.
Amenities include: a large swimming pool, surrounded by a large pool deck with chairs and room for grilling; a fitness center, featuring standard cardio equipment and a supply of weights and machines; and a basement social area with booth nooks, table games, and a bar open for immediate use or reservation. A dog park is on site for off-leash play, though most residents seem to exercise their canines in the grassy lots that flank the perimeter. Oh, and there is a $500 non-refundable deposit for your fur-ball and a fairly hefty monthly fee on top of that.
Apartments themselves are unsurprising, though the size of your kitchen will range from inconveniently small to surprisingly spacious (mine falls in the latter category...I've got cabinets on cabinets). Expect white plaster covering the brick, load-bearing walls and standard sheetrock for room partitions that have been added since the original construction. HVAC performance is hit or miss at the peak of summer and winter, though the 24-hr technicians are prompt in responding to issues.
Sheffield Court has many ups and a few downs, though it is ultimately a solid choice for living in Arlington, Virginia.
