  • No heat through November, mold, dirty

    The heating system was not working until November 30 (12 degrees outside, no central heating, very cold inside). The Allen House “model” unit and website are not representative of my apartment, which is filthy and worn (manager agreed but didn’t remedy). The toilet was dirty and had not even been flushed! When flushed, it broke and spewed water, flooded the bathroom, and soaked the living room carpet. Toilet water drained through a large gap in the dirty bathroom floor. The unit did not have ...
    a working toilet. There are leaks in the bathroom and mold on the bathtub, floors, carpeting, and sinks. Carpeting is worn and stained and so dirty I had it shampooed; the extracted residue was disgusting. Kitchen appliances were covered with a thick film of grease and dried food residue and the refrigerator and freezer were dirty. Found drug paraphernalia, used personal hygiene items, and trash scattered around the unit. Cabinets and walls have peeling paint, scuffs, and holes. Discovered electrical issues when a portable heater wouldn’t operate in several outlets (landlord would not supply adequate heat) and another tripped a breaker. Heating pipes leak onto the carpet resulting in more mold. Access to a fire door was blocked by trash and stored furniture. Unhoused people sleep in the building foyer. Apparently no “24/7 Maintenance” as claimed on the website as most requests are ignored. Management refused to properly repair or terminate the lease, notwithstanding numerous requests.
