I lived here for 2.5 years. There seemed to be a high turnover in neighbors from month to month. The building is old and in poor shape. The windows offer little refuge from the cold - this past winter, the INSIDE of my windows were often covered in ice. I did not have A/C or a dishwasher. Some of the electrical outlets were outdated and weren’t even grounded. Many things around the place were broken or just useless due to their age. bubble up. The landlord came while I was at work to patch up the damage, but the problem persisted. The moisture became so heavy in there that it ruined some of my things.
That being said, I was shocked when the landlord nickel-&-dimed me when returning my security deposit. I actually never met the landlord and never once saw him during the 2.5 years that I lived here. He was hard to get ahold of & sometimes just never even responded. I felt I had a good rapport with him, though, considering I was a reliable tenant who never caused trouble & always paid my rent in full & on time. A few days after I moved out, he contacted me saying that I couldn’t leave my mattress standing behind the dumpster as I had, & that I couldn’t leave it on the curb either. I came back promptly & had to pay a junk removal service almost $300 to have it removed. I then received my security deposit in the mail a couple months later along with a letter stating that almost $100 was being deducted from my returned deposit. The reasons stated involved not having dusted/cleaned enough. I was shocked by this because the place is so dirty to begin with and I’d done my best to clean. Almost $50 alone was deducted because a doorknob was broken. This upset me because that doorknob had been broken already when I moved in. I reached out to the landlord about this & never got a response.
