Get your library card out for one of the most amazing libraries in America. Whether you want to dowload an ebook, music or a movie online from your cleveland apartment, visit the 130,000 volume collection of children's books or check out the 1.3 million photographs, the Cleveland Public Library is a place of exploration and exciting exhibits. Founded in 1869, the mission of the library (achieved, I think, and you'll find out why) is to be the best urban library in the country. Not only does the library have the main location downtown, but 28 branches city wide, in addition to a library for the blind and physically handicappped and a mobile library. The main library building design was chosen in 1915 from a competition of architects, but the building itself, designed by Walker and Weeks, was not constructed until 1923, due to the delay caused by World War I. The library consists of two buildings, connected by an underground corridor that lies below a beautiful open air reading garden located between the two. The two buildings and the garden take up an entire city block on Superior Avenue between East 3rd Street and East 6th Street. The Main Library's Subject Departments are divided between the two buildings. Extensive rennovations were performed on the building in recent years. Now, for the highlights of the library for you Cleveland apartment-ites. Many think of a library to go to do research, find a good book, or just a location to go read or use their computers (there are over 100 at this library). This library, however, has plenty of wonderful things to look at! Featured here are the Mears and Murdock baseball collections, the Cleveland Theater compilatioin, the John G. White chess and checkers sets, a 74,000 volume rare book collection (can be viewed in the reading room), and a collected works of 1.3 million photographs. There are close to one million items, including the 120,000 childrens book collection mentioned earlier. What a great place to bring a child; to enjoy both the visuals and the books. In the Audio and Video department, over 18,000 titles of CDs are provided, sorted by music type including rock, jazz, hip hop and classical. Four DVDs may be borrowed at a time, with the collection primarily an assortment of titles with emphasis on the popular and classic entertainment genre. They may be borrowed for two days. And of course, audio books, varying from best sellers to non-fiction are available on CD or cassette, and can be borrowed for 21 days. Suprisingly, CD-ROM software in various titles can be checked out as well. The Cleveland Public Library is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm, so make sure if you're heading home to your Cleveland apartment that you leave work early enough, or make a Saturday trip. During September to May, the library is open on Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm.
