What is the history of Arcata?

Indigenous tribes inhabited the region before the arrival of European settlers during the westward migration of the 19th century. Although the area had been claimed by visiting Spaniards prior to that, they never actually lived in the area. The permanent settlement occurred after California had been admitted to the union as a state and was called Union town when it was first founded as a port city along the supply chain route to gold mines. The logging industry quickly overtook mining as the main economic force in the region. Like many other Northern California communities, Arcata has a number of homes on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of them feature Victorian architecture and were built before 1900.

How is the weather in Arcata?

Arcata residents enjoy a mild coastal climate that rarely sees freezing temperatures in winter or scorching temperatures in summer.  Average summer temperatures are in the 60s, with 40s and 50s being the norm for the rest of the year. Snowfall is very rare in Arcata, and the average rainfall amount is 39 inches per year. Arcata often experiences a marine layer effect due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, which results in fog and mist.

How do I get around town?

Arcata's typically mild weather and small size make it ideal for nontraditional transportation options such as bicycling and walking. Public transit is provided through the combined resources of Humboldt County and various communities within that county, including Arcata, Eureka, McKinleyville, and Fortuna. Fixed-route as well as Dial-a-Ride options are available.

What is the Arcata commute like?

Arcata residents who also work in the city enjoy a very short commute that usually lasts no more than 10 minutes even during rush hour. However, U.S. Route 101 runs north and south through Arcata and receives heavy tourist traffic, particularly during the summer. California State Route 255 is a loop route that runs a complete circle around Arcata and is frequently used as an alternate route between Arcata and Eureka, particularly when tourist traffic on Highway 101 is high.

What are the local media outlets?

The Arcata Eye is a weekly newspaper that is published every Wednesday and serves Arcata and Blue Lake. Mad River Union is also published weekly in Arcata. There are also 29 FM stations and 7 AM stations with range of Arcata. KHSU provides public radio broadcasting, while KSLG concentrates on classic rock. KEIM-TV provides local news broadcasts.

Why live in Arcata, CA?

Arcata is ideal for nature lovers who appreciate a college town vibe. There are lots of coffee shops, parks, and farmers markets, and it's possible to go from the beach to the middle of a redwood forest in a matter of minutes. The abundance of historic architecture creates a unique ambiance that has drawn many creative types to the area. 

What Arcata landmarks should I see?

Arcata's rich history has provided an abundance of local landmarks. The Minor Theatre was constructed in 1914 as is considered the oldest theatre in the West. Other landmarks include Dillon House, which was built in 1886, Aaron Alden House, which was built in 1908, and Fry House, which dates back to 1874. Altogether, Arcata has 88 designated historical landmarks within its city limits. 

What is there to do around Arcata?

As mentioned previously, outdoor enthusiasts find no shortage of things to do in Arcata. Options include hiking in Arcata Community Forest, beachcombing or simply enjoying being next to the Pacific Ocean at Clam Beach County Park, and wildlife viewing at Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. Natural History buffs enjoy stopping at Humboldt State University Natural History Museum, and if you're a craft cider or wine enthusiast, be sure to pay a visit to Wrangletown Cider Company & North Story Wines. 

Any annual festivals or Arcata events to know?

One of Arcata's best features is its abundance of community events and festivals — no matter what time of year, there's always something going on. Arcata celebrates Martin Luther King Day in January with a community dinner featuring rice, beans, cornbread, and salad followed by entertainment from local performing artists and a raffle featuring prizes donated by the Arcata business community. On the first Sunday in April, residents and visitors gather together to enjoy the Gotwit Days Bird Festival and the Humboldt International Film Festival. The Oyster Festival takes place in June, and the Humboldt Folk Life Festival happens in July, and September brings the North Country Fair.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Those desiring an occasional urban experience only need to drive for five hours to find themselves in the world-class city of San Francisco, while road trip enthusiasts can hit Highway 101 for some of the most stunning scenery on the West Coast. The quaint Victorian village of Ferndale is just slightly over 30 minutes from Arcata going south on Highway 101, and it's a particularly popular vacation spot during the holiday season. 

Where is the best place to move in Arcata?

Arcata is such a small town that it really doesn't have any bad parts. Most new residents make their decisions on where to live based on their life status at the time. For instance, students who want to live off-campus yet still enjoy easy proximity to Humboldt State University will want to live in one of the Arcata apartments conveniently situated in neighborhoods near the school, such as California Avenue and Sunset Avenue. Those raising families, on the other hand, will want to live in the residential neighborhoods farther from the university such as Woodland Heights, and young professionals and older students are drawn to Arcata's downtown district.
