Atwater, with a total of 6.1 square miles, is located on Highway Route 99 in Merced County. This sweet spot enjoys a racially inclusive and diverse population of approximately 28,168. It possesses all the beauty that the Central Valley of California is famed for, plus all the charm and ease of a small town. The history of the community of Atwater begins in the late 1800s. Atwater gained its name in honor of Marshall D. Atwater, a gentleman wheat farmer who helped the city to grow, set down roots, and whose land was utilized by the railroad for its first station, which reached Atwater in the 1870s. This was the beginning of town and how it began the ride towards the prosperity and growth of today. 

How is the weather in Atwater?

Atwater enjoys the fantastic and temperate climate that California is known for worldwide, and which makes it a natural agricultural center. The town enjoys 267 sunny days per year and receives, on average, precipitation 55 days per year. July is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 94.9° during the day, and December is the coldest month, with an average nighttime temperature of 37.0°. 

How do I get around town?

Warm and inviting, Atwater is eminently walkable. For drivers, there Highway 99, which moves motorists through the city limits and the surrounding environs.  For mass transit options, “The Bus,” sponsored by Merced County, provides mass transit for the city of Atwater. There's also a Dial-A-Ride service, which is used principally by senior citizens and individuals who are differentially-abled. Two major railroads serve the city, linking it to its beginning as a town on the line. And for those who enjoy air travel, Atwater has that covered with Castle Airport. (Fun fact: this airport has the 4th longest runway in the region.) 

What is the Atwater commute like?

Atwater allows for an easy commute and comfortable access to all that the region has to offer. Route 99, a major highway, runs through the town. This is a major artery from the heart to the city leading to everywhere you need to be. The average commute time in Atwater is 26.7 minutes.

Scope out the Merced Sun-Star, which serves the Merced area, plus, two weekly papers, The Atwater Signal and The Atwater Times. For radio, listen to stations like Hot 105104.7FM, Fox Sports Radio 94.1 FM, and KUBB Country 96.3 FM. There are four cable tv companies and four internet providers.
