When a person from a Boston apartment first starts down Commonwealth Avenue, they thinking there's little different it and the thousands of other streets they walk down every day, but when they reach the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, they might be giving that idea second thoughts. There are few other places in town that match the natural and artistic beauty of this thoroughfare, full of luscious greenery, sculptuary, and memorials that simply must be seen to be belived. To have an apartment near the Commonwealth Avenue Mall is to surround yourself with the beauty of nature, while staying within throwing distance of some of the most beautiful pieces of statuary in town. Though the road had been in operation for years before, the creation of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall first occurred in 1865. Then, it was a much different animal than today, with just a single statue, that of Alexander Hamilton, standing in the gorgeous greenery. In addition to these statues, the avenue is also home to a several memorials, including the Boston Women's Memorial, which features sculptures of Abigail Adams, Lucy Stone and Phillis Wheatley; and the Vendrome Memorial, dedicated to the firefighters who lost their lives in Hotel Vendrome fire in 1972.
