Pirates operated out of Newfield Harbor (now Bridgeport Harbor) during the Revolutionary War. The village was incorporated as the Borough of Bridgeport in 1800. It was still a part of Stratford at the time` but Bridgeport became a fully independent city in 1821. By the 20th century` Bridgeport was the largest industrial center in the state. The city continuously grew through the 20th century as Irish` Italian` African American` and Puerto Rican immigrants moved here.

Bridgeport has long and hot summers and occasionally cold and blustery winters. The hottest months of the year are June through September. Even though there are sunny skies almost every day these months` there's a chance of thundershowers every day due to the heat and humidity. The cold season in Bridgeport lasts from late November through mid-March. Winter precipitation is usually a mix of rain and wet snow` with an annual average of around 29 inches of snow. High temperatures in January` the coldest month` average around 31 degrees F. High temperatures in July average around 76 degrees. Fall is the prettiest time of year to visit Bridgeport when the leaves change color. 

How do I get around town?

You don't have to own a personal car to get around in Bridgeport` but most people do. The Greater Bridgeport Transit (GBT) is the local bus line that provides daily service to Bridgeport and most of the nearby suburbs. For those who work in New York City` the Amtrak and Metro-North trains are the best way to commute to and from their jobs. The two closest regional airports to Bridgeport are located in East Haven` CT (17 miles away) and Westchester County` NY (28 miles away). The two main international airports in the area -- LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy -- are about 45 miles away in New York City.

What is the Bridgeport commute like?

Bridgeport has one of the longest commute times in America. The average commute time is 31.6 minutes one-way` especially when headed in the direction of New York City. Commuters can spend as much as an extra 39 hours per year -- almost a full work-week -- in traffic. Interstate 95 is the major east-west route running through Bridgeport. To the west` it leads to New York City` and to the east` it leads all the way up to the coast to the Canadian border in Maine. Route 8` Route 25` and US 1 are some additional important roads to learn when getting around in Bridgeport.

When heading to Seaside Park` visitors can drive under the majestic granite Perry Memorial Arch. At the Barnum Museum` people can learn about and enjoy exhibits celebrating the life of American entertainer P.T. Barnum. There is only one zoo in the entire state -- Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo -- and it is located in Bridgeport. The Bridgeport Center is an easily recognizable landmark in the city; it consists of a continuous series of highrises where many people work. The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Downtown Bridgeport is an independent league baseball amphitheater that seats 5`500 people. 

What is there to do around Bridgeport?

From Seaside Beach in Bridgeport` visitors can walk to the Fayerweather Island Light. This is an important lighthouse on Long Island Sound. Just remember to use mosquito repellent from late May through the summer months! The Downtown Cabaret Theatre is a great place for dinner and a kid-friendly musical theater show. Touring Long Island Sound on a steamboat is another great experience you can have here. The Christmas Village is a major event that happens in Bridgeport every December. Beardsley Park is turned into a winter wonderland with shopping` visits with Santa` and picturesque lighting displays. For outdoor adventures` check out the Adventure Park at the Discovery Museum.

Where is the best place to move in Bridgeport?

The Brooklawn/St. Vincent neighborhood is close to the downtown area and is one of several neighborhoods with Bridgeport rental homes available. Boston Avenue - Mill Hill is on the east side of the city. It's close to the main hospital in Bridgeport and right on the border with Stratford. The Hollow is one of the closest neighborhoods to Downtown Bridgeport and has two-story homes and townhomes available. The Reservoir/Whiskey Hill neighborhood is in the northern part of Bridgeport.
