Bridgeport Overview

Bridgeport is the most populated city in the state of Connecticut and the fifth most populated in all of New England. It sits along the north shore of Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Pequonnock River and is considered part of the Greater New York City Area. Officially known as The Park City, it is renowned for its 1,300 acres of public parklands. It consists of five distinct geographic areas and 13 defined neighborhoods over 16 square miles. Home to young healthcare professionals working at St. Vincent’s Medical Center or Bridgeport Hospital, it is also a commuter town for those traveling to work in NYC. With builders refurbishing the old factories into stylish living spaces, there are many unique Bridgeport apartments for working singles and families.

What is the history of Bridgeport?

Originally inhabited by the Paugusset Tribe, this English farming community was once the center of trade, whaling, and shipbuilding. With the railroad connecting Bridgeport to NYC in 1945, it rapidly grew into a major industrial center with several iron foundries and factories. European immigrants flocked to the area to manufacture sewing machines, automobiles, and firearms. By the 1970s, most of the factories had shut down, and many people left the area. Today, it is again a bustling city with young professionals moving into newly refurbished factory apartments in Bridgeport.

How is the weather in Bridgeport?

The Bridgeport weather is somewhere between a humid subtropical and a humid continental climate. This makes for wide seasonal temperature shifts with hot and summers and sometimes frigidly cold winters. Summer temperatures can reach 100 degrees F, but it is rare. Winter temperatures can dip below the freezing point, and heavy snowfall is common from December through March. Due to its coastal location, the snow cover does not remain for more than a few days.

How do I get around town?

Travel around Bridgeport requires a car, and there is easy access to the highways that make their way along the southern edge of Connecticut. Both Amtrak and the Metro-North commuter trains take people to New York City for work. The Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority provides regular service between Bridgeport and the many surrounding suburbs, including Trumbull, Stratford, and Fairfield. There is also a passenger and automobile ferry that runs hourly service during the summer months from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, New York across the Long Island Sound.

What is the Bridgeport commute like?

There are two major highways that run parallel to each other along the south and north sides of Bridgeport. Interstate 95 goes from NYC through the entire length of Connecticut and into Rhode Island along the coast. Route 15 to the north is a scenic drive through the non-coastal areas of the state and passes through Trumbull. Route 8/Route 25 connects the two highways by cutting through the middle of Bridgeport from north to south.

What are the local media outlets?

The Connecticut Post is the daily newspaper that covers the greater Bridgeport area. Most of the TV stations broadcast from NYC, but the Connecticut Public Television station WEDW still broadcasts from Bridgeport. Local radio stations include WCUM-AM, a Spanish-language station, WICC-AM, a news station, and WEBE-FM, a music station.

Why live in Bridgeport, CT?

Bridgeport is home to more than 144,000 residents who enjoy the many parks and shoreline activities in a city that is close enough to NYC to work, but far enough away that it does not feel like a metropolitan area. Apartments in Bridgeport have access to a variety of live theaters, fine arts museums, and an auditorium that is home to the Greater Bridgeport Symphony. There are several colleges and universities in the area, including the University of Bridgeport and St. Vincent’s College. There are music events, arts festivals, sports activities, and plenty of local restaurants to keep everyone satisfied.

What Bridgeport landmarks should I see?

Circus showman, P.T. Barnum once lived in Bridgeport and served as the mayor during the late 19th century, which is why The Barnum Museum is here. You might want to have lunch at the first Subway sandwich shop which opened here in 1965. The Black Rock Harbor Historic District contains quaint, old neighborhoods and a seaport that dates back to the 17th century. The area is known for its architectural designs and landscaped courtyards.

What is there to do around Bridgeport?

The only zoo in the state is Beardsley Zoo, featuring exotic and endangered amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Seaside Park is a favorite waterside destination in Bridgeport. With 325 acres of shady glades, lush lawns, sunny beaches, and sports fields alongside the Long Island Sound, it is the place to be during the summer. There is also a professional hockey and independent baseball league that play at Harbor Yard.

Any annual festivals or Bridgeport events to know?

The annual Gathering of Vibes is a weeklong music, arts, and camping festival that takes place at Seaside Park and celebrates the music of the Grateful Dead. Two stages feature alternating bands performing funk, bluegrass, rock, jazz, and reggae style music. The Barnum Festival hosts several weeks of fun events throughout May and June that celebrate the spirit of P.T. Barnum, including pub crawls, road races, parades, concerts, formal dances, and circus shows.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Located in the heart of New England, there are many places to travel to every weekend. Boston is less than three hours northeast and Portland, Maine is just four hours. Connecticut is also home to many beautiful vacation spots, such as the quaint seaside village of Mystic an hour away.

Where is the best place to move in Bridgeport?

There are apartments in Bridgeport throughout the five districts, including Downtown, the East Side, West Side, North End, and South End. Each section has its own vibe and unique points of interest. Downtown is often referred to as the “teardrop” due to its shape. The area is focusing on preservation and the adaptive reuse of existing structures. Downtown is home to the majority of arts, culture, and entertainment offerings in the city. East Side is located closest to the healthcare and education jobs in the area, as well as the rail lines that travel into NYC. The North End is mostly residential with three of the largest parks, Veterans Memorial Park, Puglio Park, and Elton Rogers Park.
