Buffalo Overview

How does living in a city of great food and good neighbors sound? As a Buffalo resident, you’ll be in a welcoming environment with tons of restaurants around — from pizzerias to fine dining! The City of Good Neighbors/Queen City has a lot to offer, including arts and culture, waterfront amenities, nightlife — and, of course, football! This western New York city also has several major employers in healthcare, manufacturing, and other industries. Its location offers easy access to Lake Erie, Niagara Falls, and Toronto. Let’s take a deep dive into what makes this city an amazing place to call home — and why more and more people are looking for rental homes in Buffalo!

What is the history of Buffalo?

Did you know that Buffalo used to be known as New Amsterdam? That was back in the early 1800s when the town first got its start. Its location along trade routes — and close to several waterways — made it a prime spot for growth and development. The Erie Canal, built in 1925, brought even more settlers and trade to the area. Buffalo officially became a city in 1932. As the Gateway to the West, the city thrived as an industrial and trade center during the 1800s and 1900s. The 20th century brought steel and automobile manufacturers here, leading to tons of jobs and higher populations. In recent years, Buffalo has been revitalizing its waterfront, drawing more tourists — and attracting more and more residents!

How is the weather in Buffalo?

Looking for a winter wonderland? You’ll usually get that during Buffalo winters. The city has an average snowfall of 94 inches! Highs in winter are typically in the 30s — but the area does get some cold snaps with highs in the 20s or lower. Lows fall to the teens and 20s. But summertime brings pleasant temps to the area. Highs are often in the upper 70s and low 80s, with lows in the 60s. During spring and fall in Buffalo, you’ll get daytime temps ranging from the 40s to 60s. Lows during these seasons range from the 30s to 50s.

How do I get around town?

Homes for rent in Buffalo may make it easy to get around without a car. But it depends on which part of the city you live in. Living in the outer areas and suburbs usually means you’ll need a car for reliable transportation. The city does have public transportation options — the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) Metro Rail and Metro Bus. The Metro Rail goes down Main Street in the city. Metro Buses have several stops in and around Buffalo, including in some of the surrounding suburbs. Traveling outside the city? Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 15 minutes from downtown. There’s also an Amtrak Station in nearby Depew and Amtrak and Greyhound stations in downtown Buffalo.

What is the Buffalo commute like?

Buffalo has one of the shortest commute times out of all the larger cities in the U.S.! it takes about 20 minutes or less to get around. Certain roadways might get backed up during rush hour or bad weather, such as snowstorms. Some of the major routes in and around Buffalo include I-190 along the western side of the city, I-90 in the eastern suburbs, and NY 33 on the eastern side of the city. Route 5 — Main Street — runs north-south through downtown. No matter where you look for Buffalo rental homes, you can look forward to fairly short commutes to and from work or school!

Buffalo rentals are incredibly affordable! A lower cost of living compared to other large metro areas helps your dollar go further.
