Corpus Christi Overview
Looking for a coastal city to call home? Corpus Christi offers incredible gulf views — and an affordable cost of living compared to other towns along U.S. coasts! This South Texas city has beaches, bays, and other areas where you can get out and enjoy fresh air and lots of sun. You’ll also be just a few hours away from Houston, Austin, and other Texas cities for day trips. But Corpus Christi has plenty of things to do in town — historical sites, art museums, and gardens are just a few examples. Let’s take a closer look at why Corpus Christi homes for rent are a great option in the Lone Star State!
What is the history of Corpus Christi?
Did you know that Corpus Christ’s name dates all the way back to 1519? Explorer Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda gave the area that name for the “Body of Christ” feast day. But its roots as a town started much later — in 1838. That’s when the area was a frontier trading post. Corpus Christi officially became a city in 1852. Over the years, it grew into a major shipping center — and it’s now one of the biggest ports in the U.S. In fact, it’s known as the biggest gateway for energy exports in the whole country!
How is the weather in Corpus Christi?
It’s hot! Summer temperatures during the day climb up into the 90s — and humidity tends to be high. So, plan on spending time indoors with the AC on in summer. Even nighttime temperatures are hot, with lows only getting to the mid-70s. But the rest of the year has pleasantly warm weather! Winter highs are in the 60s and lows are in the 40s. Spring and fall highs are usually in the 70s and 80s, with lows in the 50s and 60s. Watch out for hurricane season! That runs from June through November. With Corpus Christi being a coastal city on the Gulf of Mexico, it’s a smart idea to pay attention to hurricane preparedness!
How do I get around town?
Is a car necessary for living here? Not if you look for rental homes in Corpus Christi in one of the more walkable areas — like Central City or the Bay Area. But if you end up anywhere else in town, you’ll most likely need to have a car handy. Corpus Christi does have buses you can take to get around. CCRTA runs about 30 routes in and around the city. What if you need to leave town? Catch a flight at Corpus Christi International Airport on the western side of the city. Or take a bus from one of two Greyhound Bus Stations in Corpus Christi. There’s one on the west side of town — and the other’s on the east side near the bay.
What is the Corpus Christi commute like?
It’s shorter compared to the national average of 26 minutes. In fact, commuting here takes roughly 19 minutes on average! Most people drive to and from work — so expect more traffic during rush hour. You may want to search for homes for rent in Corpus Christi that give you easy access to major roads. I-695 runs north-south through the northwestern edge of town. I-37 runs east-west across the northern part of the city. TX-44 goes east-west through the western side of town. And TX-358 passes right through the center of town from east to west. Note that Corpus Christi is known for being a driver-friendly city — thanks to its short commutes and good traffic flow!
Why live in Corpus Christi, TX?
Love the thought of having quick access to beaches? Exploring options for affordable housing? Corpus Christi rentals give you both! You can find homes here in your price range — no matter what it is! And you’re just a short drive or quick walk to beautiful beaches. The city also has good seafood restaurants, nature reserves, museums, and so much more! You’ll also find Texas A&M University here for higher education. What about jobs? Corpus Christi has major employers in aerospace and aviation, manufacturing, healthcare, education, maritime shipping, and other industries — making it a great place to find work!
What Corpus Christi landmarks should I see?
Interested in history? Climb aboard the USS Lexington Museum to explore a WWII aircraft carrier! Check out historic houses in the city, including the French-Galvan House, Britton-Evans Centennial House, and Julius Lichtenstein House. Looking for art and culture? There’s the Art Museum of South Texas with watercolors, sculptures, and tons of other artwork. Head to the Selena Museum for exhibits honoring the life of famed Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Or visit Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures and Educational Center to see a Hakata Doll collection, calligraphy, and other exhibits.
What is there to do around Corpus Christi?
Looking for indoor or outdoor activities? The city has plenty of both to enjoy as a resident! Stroll along the sand on local beaches at Corpus Christi Bay. Or head over to Padres Island National Seashore for windsurfing, camping, beachcombing, and other activities. There’s also Mustang Island for kayaking, paddling, bird watching, picnics, and lots of other outdoor excitement! Visit the South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center to see orchids, plumeria, roses, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Catch a ball game at Whataburger Field. Or spend time at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History for gems, historical photos, vintage furniture — and more
