Houston Overview

As the largest city in Texas, Houston has something for everyone. If you're looking for homes for rent in Houston, you'll be delighted to explore the city's diverse neighborhoods, wide variety of year-round activities, long list of attractions, and rich history. A major center for the aerospace and energy industries for decades, it's easy to see why Houston is such a desirable place to call home.

What is the history of Houston?

The first inhabitants of the Houston region were the Karankawas and Akokisas tribes, evidence of these indigenous peoples' fishing, hunting, and gathering dates back to 8,100 BC. Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, and settlers soon followed. In 1836, the Allen brothers officially founded the city, naming it for General Sam Houston. The region quickly became a commerce hub and, after the 1901 discovery of "black gold," the oil capital of the world. With a few ups and downs in between, Houston experienced booming growth for decades and today is a center for the energy, aerospace, and medical industries.

How is the weather in Houston?

In good news for those seeking homes for rent in Houston, the city has a temperate climate that lends itself to an outdoor lifestyle. Summers tend to be hot and humid, often reaching over 90F, while winters offer mild temperatures — averages of 40 to 60F — and less rainfall. Spring is rainy and warm, while fall tends to be dry and comfortable. Thunderstorms are common year-round.

How do I get around town?

Access to a car makes getting around easier, but it's not a must. Houston rental homes in downtown neighborhoods are considered walkable, and Houston's METRO system offers extensive bus and light rail access across the city. Greyhound and Amtrak offer bus and train routes out of Houston's Union Station. As for air travel, Houston's Hobby (HOU) and Bush (IAH) airports handle domestic and international flights.

What is the Houston commute like?

When you're looking for Houston rentals, potential commute times are an important consideration. The city is ringed by several major roadways, including Interstate 610 (a.k.a. the Loop), which connects downtown, uptown, and midtown. Interstate 10 connects downtown to the western suburbs, while Interstate 45 runs north to Spring and The Woodlands, and Interstate 69 runs southwest to Sugarland. As with any major metro area, these routes experience congestion at rush hour. For a faster (and pricier) drive that avoids traffic, take the Beltway 8 tollway.

What are the local media outlets?

Houston offers a diverse media environment. The paper of note, The Houston Chronicle, was founded in 1901. Local news stations include KHOU 1, KTRK 13 and KPRC 2. Popular radio stations offer a variety of music, news and information and include KLTN (Spanish language), KILT (country music), KLOL (Latin pop music), and KKHH (Top 40 music).

Why live in Houston, TX?

It's not hard to see why so many choose rental homes in Houston. After all, this vibrant city has much to offer. A healthy economy means jobs are plentiful, yet the cost of living remains relatively affordable with a variety of rental housing options to choose from. Houston offers world-class museums, a thriving art community, and intriguing historical sites. People from around the country and the world call Houston home, a diversity that contributes to the city's innovative food scene and lively music culture. A temperate climate contributes to an active outdoor lifestyle, with beaches and lakes nearby. Houston's several major sports teams and year-round schedule of festivals means there's always something to do, see or experience in Houston.

What Houston landmarks should I see?

Landmarks and historical monuments bring Houston's rich past to life. Don't miss the San Jacinito Monument, a 560-foot tower that memorializes the battle for Texas's separation from Mexico, and the George Ranch Historical Park, an 1824 homestead. Houston is home to Rice University, a private, tier-one research school, Texas Southern University, a historically Black school, and three campuses of the University of Houston.

What is there to do around Houston?

If you're looking for Houston homes for rent, you'll quickly learn why Houston is such a desirable place to live. Top attractions in the city include world-class museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Menil Art Collection. You can catch a show (opera, ballet, symphony, musical concerts and more) in the Theater District, or tour Space Center Houston. Then there are the sports, Houston is home to the Astros (baseball), the Dynamo and Dash (soccer), the Rockets (basketball), the Texans (football), and the Sabercats (rugby), so there's almost always a game on.

Any annual festivals or Houston events to know?

Residents of rental homes in Houston have their pick of fun festivals. In spring, take in the amazing Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the wildly creative Houston Art Car Parade, and the stunning Dragon Boat Festival, a celebration of Chinese culture. In March, the Bayou City Art Festival — one of the nation's largest — takes over Sam Houston Park. May brings world-renown musicians to town for the Houston International Jazz Festival. In summer, get your bard on at the Houston Shakespeare Festival, followed by fall's Houston Film Festival.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

When a long weekend awaits, there are plenty of nearby vacation spots. Houston is just a short drive from Galveston Island, a popular vacation destination on the Gulf. About an hour north of the city lies Lake Conroe and the Cagle Recreation Area for fishing, hiking and boating fun. About 200 miles down the coast, Corpus Christi offers plenty of beach time. And the vibrant cities of San Antonio and Austin are just a few hours drive away.

Where is the best place to move in Houston?

Houston is packed with livable neighborhoods. Great choices to call home include the Heights, a historic neighborhood northeast of downtown known for its eclectic shopping, and lovely old homes. For those who want to be in the center of the action, the Montrose neighborhood is full of eateries and pubs.  The Memorial District is known for its highly rated schools, while Downtown is always bustling with arts and culture.

I grew up in H-town. Its a good place to live. Plenty of stuff to do and great restaurants abound. I recommend living on the Northwest side though. Like out in the Cypress area off 290. Its a little out of town, but you have everything you need there.
