Garland Overview

Refreshing Garland is an easy choice for making your new homeplace in Dallas-Fort Worth. Garland has a small community feel, though it’s home to about a quarter of a million residents and is a part of the vast Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Compared to the population center of over 8 million people a few minutes to the southwest of it, again, Garland feels like a small town. Located a few minutes northeast of downtown Dallas, Garland is a culturally diverse little city with its own robust economy and employment market and thriving arts and entertainment scene. There are many affordable homes for rent in Garland, TX. The town features many beautiful parks, outdoor recreational and sports activities, and good public schools. Garland has a home-town atmosphere, yet its a major manufacturing center for Texas, making it popular with young professionals and families.

What is the history of Garland?

Garland has come a long way from Duck Creek. In the 1700s, the Garland area was populated by the Caddo Nation group of tribes. The Spanish laid claim to the area, and by the mid-1800s, European settlers arrived. Originally called Duck Creek, the settlement eventually merged with neighboring Embree, and the new town was renamed Garland (after the Attorney General of that time). In 1887, Garland was officially established by the US Congress. The two World Wars generated a thriving economy in Garland, driven by new agricultural and manufacturing developments. Today, Garland is a key manufacturing center for Texas and a diverse community with about 27% white, 15% African American, 12% Asian, and 43% Hispanic or Latino residents.

How is the weather in Garland?

Garland, Texas is right for people who want to enjoy being outside as much as possible. The average temperatures in Garland, TX through December and January are highs in the mid 50°s and lows in the mid to high 30°s, February and March from highs in the high 60°s to lows in the high 40°s, April highs around 76° and lows around 55°, May 83° and 63°, June through August highs in the mid 90°s and lows in the mid 70°s, September 88° and 68°, October 78° and 56°, and November 67° and 46°. Rainfall is pretty evenly distributed throughout the year. Humidity tends to be high in summer and low the rest of the year. Altogether, Garland is a comfortable environment for the classic southwest US lifestyle — lots of outdoor recreational sports, frequent barbecues, and downtime in the backyard with sweet tea and leisure activities.

How do I get around town?

Have a car but save the mileage with all the transportation options in Garland. Owning a car in Texas means freedom to explore the great American Southwest. However, there are lots of options for convenient public transportation in Garland. You can easily get to work, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment venues by Lyft and Uber ridesharing. Taxis are available. Bicycling is abundant, and Uber offers electric bike rentals in some areas. The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) system provides metro area bus service. For commuters, the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) light rail system connects Dallas to Ft Worth, Plano, Irving, Plano, Carrollton, Irving, Richardson, and other local cities. TEXRail serves Fort Worth and connects to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (27 miles) for long-distance travel. Dallas Love Field Airport flies domestically and is closer to Garland (17 miles).

What is the Garland commute like?

Garland offers abundant transportation choices on the upper eastern side of Dallas-Fort Worth. Interstate 30 is the direct route from southern Garland to downtown Dallas (20 miles). Or, take the I635 bypass, which entirely circles Dallas and has exits on every side of the city. In low-traffic hours, its the most efficient route to many areas of the city. State Route 75 runs from downtown Dallas past northern Garland and continues northward to Plano. The President George Bush Turnpike crosses through northeast Garland from I30 on the far east side of the metro area to the west side toward Ft. Worth (50 miles). State route 78 runs south from the east side of Lavon Lake (northeast of Garland) and cuts through the middle of town from north to south, then ends at intersecting I635.

Why live in Garland, TX?

In the DFW megalopolis, living in Garland puts you close enough and far enough to the action. Garland is much more than a suburb of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metropolis, offering residents close access to downtown Dallas and a convenient commute even to the farthest reach of the Fort Worth end of the urban area. Yet, Garland is a world removed from the fast-paced dual city centers. Garland is a culturally diverse town with its own fascinating history, quiet appeal, Texas vibe, and lively arts and entertainment scene. It’s a pleasant mix of influences. The little city offers great shopping, restaurants, and endless outdoor recreational options. The Garland area offers a wide range of employment opportunities, including in manufacturing, construction, food production, customer service, education, healthcare, retail, sales, advertising, banking services, military defense, IT services, financial services, engineering, government, aerospace, and others.

What Garland landmarks should I see?

Many things really are bigger in Texas, like the list of impressive Garland landmarks. Old Downtown Garland is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Garland Civic Theatre and the Plaza Theater are two of the town’s great landmarks and entertainment venues. The Garland Landmark Museum and the Heritage Farmstead Museum offer just a couple of the great collections of exhibits in the vicinity. Lake Ray Hubbard, bordering southeast Garland, is almost 23,000 acres. It is the primary landmark for Garland. The Heritage Crossing Home, the Santa Fe Depot, Tinsley-Lyles House, and Pullman Railcar are all historic landmarks worth a visit. The Travis College Hill District is another entire area of town constituting an expansive landmark, as is the Bankhead Highway. There are many other interesting historical sites and beautiful architectural works to enjoy in and around Garland and the greater Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.

What is there to do around Garland?

The Texas of the Old West has evolved into the cosmopolitan environment of Dallas-Fort Worth. The Garland arts scene features many live music venues, live theater, ballet, the mesmerizing Garland Symphony Orchestra, and more. The Curtis Culwell Center and the Granville Arts Center host live musical performances and other major events. Branch out to attend great events and attractions throughout the metroplex. That includes going anyplace where there is cheering for the Dallas Cowboys — the stadium, a sports bar, a backyard, etc. Don’t miss the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens or the Dallas World Aquarium. Enjoy the Spring Creek Forest Preserve Nature Trail for gorgeous scenery. Or, get your fresh air at the Firewheel Town Center, a popular outdoor shopping, dining, and entertainment option. There are endless outdoor recreational sports options. When in doubt, head for Lake Ray Hubbard for water sports, or relax lakeside. Take a sunset dinner cruise. Enjoy the diverse cuisines of Garland and Dallas. Eat Tex-Mex or barbecue anywhere in town. It’s part of being a Texan.
