Dallas Overview

For Texans and out-of-staters alike, the city of Dallas is a real treasure — not only for the excitement of the place, but because of its palpable touch of the American South. Living in Dallas is like getting a front-row seat to a Texan performance, the barbecue is world-renowned, the skyline is breathtaking, and the job market is spicier than jalapeños. Dallas neighborhoods provide a wide range of housing styles, from opulent estates to hipster escapes, here, cosmopolitan chic meets the Texan frontier. Dallas is more than a city — it’s a place where you can embrace the thrill of the Texas rodeo with an unmistakable Lone Star style.

What is the history of Dallas?

The city of Dallas, Texas, had its beginnings in the middle of the nineteenth century as a small trading town. It transformed into a livestock and cotton powerhouse and exploded into a big commercial center when the railroads arrived. After the tragic assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, Dallas quickly recovered by incorporating financial and technology ventures into its business community. Embracing a varied culture and thriving economy, Dallas now stands tall with urban views that match its cowboy attitude.

How is the weather in Dallas?

The weather in Dallas is highly unpredictable. Wildflowers and warm weather usher in spring, but it may be hard to mark the beginning of summer as the heat in Texas is more intense than a chili pepper — so brace yourself! As fall arrives, relief arrives in the form of cooler breezes and football fever. An unexpected cold snap can hit at any moment in winter, so be prepared to wear layers, even if it’s just a light sweater. In general, be ready for sunburns, pool days, and a call for the odd sweater, in Dallas, it’s basically a weather fiesta.

How do I get around town?

Having wheels is your best bet to get around in the sprawling cowboy town of Dallas. But can residents still get by on foot? Indeed, they can to some areas, but don’t expect the walkability to be like New York City. While the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) buses and light rail provide service inside the city, they don’t reach all of the municipality’s ranches. The primary hub that connects Dallas to the rest of the world is Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

What is the Dallas commute like?

In many ways, the network of roadways in Dallas resembles a giant bowl of spaghetti. Downtown is bifurcated by I-35E, I-30 runs east to west, and I-635 forms a lasso. While US-75 heads into Oklahoma, the Dallas North Tollway travels north. As far as traffic, be prepared to strap yourself in, most residents have experienced their fair share of rush hour chaos. The traffic on I-35 can be bad, but the city is currently attempting to mitigate this. Keep in mind that the roads in Dallas are more than simply a means of transportation, they’re the embodiment of Dallas’ warm Southern hospitality.

What are the local media outlets?

From rock choruses played on 97.1 (“The Eagle”) to pop rhythms on KISS FM, Dallas radio has it all. Upbeat vibes can be heard on 94.9 KLTY, while sports talk is heavy on 105.3 (“The Fan”). Radio stations KERA and WFAA will keep news junkies informed, as will the Dallas Morning News and D Magazine, the two daily periodicals that cover all things local.

Why live in Dallas, TX?

Like a Texan feast, Dallas rentals offer a little bit of everything. The city boasts a vibrant arts scene, a culinary paradise for epicureans, and a thriving employment market. The Texas barbecue is out of this world, and the skyline is like a shiny cowboy hat topping it all off. As far as homes for rent in Dallas go, the city is perfect, the local Tex-Mex cuisine never fails to satisfy, the sun is always shining, and football is practically a religion in the city. Simply stated, Dallas is where laid-back metropolitan style meets easygoing southern charm. In fact, Dallas is more than just a city — it’s a way of life.

What Dallas landmarks should I see?

Dallas is a great place to experience both the old and the new. Drop by Dealey Plaza, the site of a controversial turn in history, there’s a weighty tale told in the Sixth Floor Museum. Feeling creative? A great way to spend an afternoon is at the Nasher Sculpture Center. The Southern invocation of college spirit can be found at Southern Methodist University (SMU). And if all those aren’t enough, you can’t leave Texas without seeing Dallas’ renowned State Fair and Reunion Tower, the latter of which is like a dazzling urban space needle. Many residents look at Dallas like a Texan time capsule, blending the modern with the historical, from tributes to President John F. Kennedy to local university pride.

What is there to do around Dallas?

Dallas is a paradise for many residents. The Deep Ellum Arts Festival is a neon-lit bash, while the city’s Arts District is a center for culture. The Dallas Zoo can be a ton of fun, so be sure not to miss it. The Perot Museum’s intellectual entertainment and the world-famous Dallas Arboretum draw many visitors as well. Apartment dwellers in Dallas routinely enjoy dining on Tex-Mex food, going to Cowboys games, and listening to live music. With its rodeos and rooftop bars, Dallas combines the best of cowboy culture with the excitement of the city.

Any annual festivals or Dallas events to know?

The people of Dallas are master party planners! The “fried everything” and crazy rides at the Texas State Fair are highly renowned. With its focus on local artists and musicians, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival is a haven for hipsters. When the Lights All Night festival rolls around, Dallas becomes a mecca for electronic dance music. Fans of cinema flock to the Dallas International Film Festival. Dallas festivals are authentic Texan celebrations where you can consume funnel cakes and other guilty pleasures and dance the night away.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Adventurers are encouraged to commence their Texas journeys in Dallas. Travelers can find peace and tranquility in the swamps of Caddo Lake, or if you’re in the mood for lakeside fun, head over to Possum Kingdom State Park. Fun seekers can discover the Oklahoma water paradise of Turner Falls or plunge into the thrills of Six Flags Over Texas. For a seaside vibe on the sandy coast, Galveston is just a few hours’ drive south. With new adventures to be had only a few hours away by car, Dallas serves as the perfect starting point for epic Texas road trips.

Where is the best place to move in Dallas?

Visitors will find that the neighborhoods of Dallas are as varied as a Tex-Mex dish. There’s a plethora of nightlife and artistic energy in Uptown, making it a hipster’s paradise. Thanks to its alternative nightlife and edgy graffiti art, the Deep Ellum entertainment district is the city’s liveliest section. Charming shops and restaurants abound in the Bishop Arts District, making it something of a Bohemian haven on a shoestring. Meanwhile, the atmosphere of Preston Hollow makes it one of the city’s most opulent and verdant neighborhoods. Whether you’re looking for a quiet suburban area or the center of a bustling metropolis, rental homes in Dallas have you covered.
