A hospital joined the city in 1915, with local industries such as the flour mill, saw mill and, of course, vineyards helping to yield a sound economic foundation.

Winters are often wet and cool, although snow is a rarity, and summers lean towards the dry and warm end of things. Ground fog, often rolling in from San Francisco, helps add moisture to the air, and summer evenings can easily dip into the low 50s at night.
