A shoe fetish is nothing to be ashamed of, and if you happen to love shoes, you may want to find out how designer shoes got their start in America. The Lynn Heritage State Park will reveal all sorts of intriguing information about early Massachusetts. Lynn, a small community just north of Boston, is where John Adam Dagyr, a Welsh immigrant, introduced improved techniques to making high quality women's shoes. This was in the 1750's after shoes had been mainly made in homes during the winter nights. The town of Lynn became prosperous exporting these shoes to the country through the many nearby ports. In the 1850's, when new machinery was initiated, the town became even more prosperous and attracted designers from around the US and even Europe. General Electric got its start here as well, with the help of Thomas Edison, who led ground-breaking electrical advancements. The promise of manufacturing electrical motors grew to point of replacing shoe making as a major industry in the 20's and 30's. During World War II, the first jet engine plane was built at a plant in Lynn, under much secrecy. In the 19th and early 20th century, pharmaceuticals were not as easy to access as today for aches, pains and various diseases. Here at the park, you can also find out about some of the medicinals invented by Lydia Pinkham that became world renowned. Lynn Heritage is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4:00 pm, and offers free admission. Take a trip on the MBTA from your Boston area apartment to check out early shoe making and pioneering electronics in this quaint seaside town. While you're there, you can even visit Waterfront Park, where a beautiful mosaic mural details Lynn's history.
