Public understanding of the visual art is strived for, through efforts such as thought-provoking exhibits, interactive learning experiences, research, and programs including films, artist lectures and concerts. The art collection comprising over 450,000 pieces is vast, and includes art of the Americas, Asia, Oceania and Africa, Europe and the Ancient World. Collections of Contemporary Art, Musical Instruments, Prints, Drawings and Photographs and Textiles and Fashion Art are presented in separate wings and sections of the museum. The exciting part about the museum is that with so many gorgeous pieces, and a destination for art from around the world, there is almost always something new for residents of Boston apartments to see, should you make it a regular habit to visit the museum. A beautiful research library with over 320,000 items exists for Art and Art History majors to aid in their study of fine art, or just the curious art enthusiast. The library supports the immense art collection housed in the museum and is open to the public Monday-Friday, 1-5 pm. To make a day of the trip, you must try the delicious food at one of the three restaurants. Even the basement café features amazing pork tenderloin, sweet potatoes and asparagus - all for under $7! To remember your visit, you may want to visit the MFA shop to purchase jewelry, greeting cards, baskets or pottery. The shop wares, as the museum, suggest a huge array of items. The MFA opens seven days a week at 10 am, and closes at various times, never before 4:30 pm.
