Southern Methodist University (AKA SMU) is a private University near the center of Dallas, Texas. SMU was founded by the United Methodist church in 1911 as a seminary. Today, it is non-sectarian and does not use the bible or other religious document to support its curriculum. SMU is committed to creating an open spirit of inquiry. When choosing a major at SMU an incoming student can choose from seven different schools of study: Humanities and Sciences, Business, Performing arts, Visual and Communication Arts, Engineering, Education and Human Development, and Law and theology. Once an area of study is chosen, a student will then have to consider the cost of tuition. A private university, the base tuition is notably higher than that of a Public school. With that you get an extremely high-quality education with a vast network of possibilities after graduation. On a side note, about 70% of the students who attend Full-Time get some form of financial aid. As mentioned above, living on campus is an option, although quite pricey. On campus you have a number of great residence halls to choose like Boaz, Cockrell-Mcintosh, Mary Hay, and McElvaney. As would be expected in Texas, all of these residence halls are air conditioned, coed, non-smoking, have a 24 hour card activated security system and laundry rooms with both washer and dryer. The cost of the halls vary depending on the living arrangement that is chosen. If you want to live in one of the on-campus apartment style residencies, that is an option as well. There are some very nice units to choose from, which are ideally for working graduate students. Rent in these on-campus apartments typically are similar to market rate (if not a little bit higher). The best housing option for this area of Dallas in our opinion though would be off-campus living. If you have a vehicle or wouldn't mind using the bus system, living in an off-campus apartment may be considerably cheaper. If you do choose to live off campus, however, you will need to worry about your own energy costs and other bills. All bills aside, the freedom of having your own apartment is the way to go. Football is big at SMU!! The Mustangs are a division-I and have been noted to be scheduled against huge programs like the University of Texas, U of H, Rice and other large universities. During their games, fans wear white construction hats that proudly bare the deep blood red color of the SMU logo. New head coach, June Jones, is portrayed by his fans as a modern day messiah. This is no surprise as he brings with him a vast experience of coaching football from both the NCAA as well as the NFL. Backed by commercials that begin with intense music, reminiscent of some 1980's action movie, we see a pair of shoes, a football helmet with a pony on it, a football and then a deep voice that intones: JUNE JONES! NOT JUST A MONTH. AN ERA! JUNE COMETH! The expectation is for Coach Jones to bring he football team once again to a high level of competency. All in All, I think that the experience of going to SMU would be well worth the time of anyone who is fortunate enough to be able to afford the tuition and living expenses. PONY UP!
